The UA Psion class in Dungeons and Dragons is virtually invincible.

After playing for the first few years dungeons and dragons Starting with 5e I started dreaming about new classes for the system. I knew that older versions didn't pull any punches in this department thanks to systems like prestige classes, so I was curious to see how 5e would approach the topic. Each version of the Inventor class initially scratched that itch, making intelligence more useful, but only temporarily. Enter Scion. dungeons and dragons released the first version of this class in May 2025, and now there's an updated version with all kinds of tweaks, most of which make it more powerful than ever.

Looks like Sion dungeons and dragons'The thing about the Artisan class is that they are both very flexible in terms of play style. Depending on the build path a player chooses, their Scion can be an aspirant like an organic weapon-wielding Gish, a telekinetic crowd control expert, or a bard who manipulates dice rolls. Surprisingly, the three returning Scion subclasses are more powerful than ever in the new UA documentation. If you haven't already thought that psion is a good alternative to a wizard or mage, this update is a strong reason to give it a chance.

If you're not interested in updating the psion class, take a look at the new UA documentation anyway. Because it also includes playtest versions of several new spells.

Dungeons & Dragons' new Sion class is getting stronger and stronger

Dungeons & Dragons Excavation Arcana Scion Update

First of all, the core class functionality has been improved in some important ways. For example, Scion now has 30 feet of telepathy by default instead of 5 feet, which can make a big difference in stealth or social interactions. But more importantly, a few changes make the class much more forgiving when using Psionic Energy dice.

  • Several psionic disciplines now only consume psionic energy dice if the associated d20 roll is successful, conserving the player's resources if using the ability has no effect.

  • Psionic Restoration now appears to restore all psionic energy dice the player has expended after one minute of meditation, rather than half the maximum dice as part of a short rest.

  • In later levels, a new Psionic Reserve feature allows players to always start a fight with at least four psionic energy dice.

These changes have many implications. The abilities of the Psion class require a large expenditure of psionic energy die between discipline and subclass functions. Players are now less pressured to save their dice for fear of running out. That being said, each subclass in this article also has its own buffs.

Adjusted features

strain

  • More free bonuses like temporary HP from Mutable Form and extra damage from Life-Bending Weapons

  • The new Flesh Weaver feature adds increased AC or bonus healing to your Mutable Form.

  • Although it's not a direct buff, Wizards of the Coast notes that they plan to add magic items that will benefit organic weapons once they print the variant.

mental exercise

  • Uses resources more efficiently, with Rebound Field's temporary HP guarantee and enhanced telekinesis no longer consuming spell slots.

  • The new Stronger Telekinesis ability significantly increases Mage Hand's range and weight limits.

  • It has a slower flight speed, but using Psionic Energy Die instead of Intelligence allows it to last longer and add more potential damage.

telepathy

  • Better combat spells: Slow instead of Speak With Plants, Yolande's Regal Presence instead of Awaken.

  • Psionic Distraction: A new ability that uses psionic energy dice to reflect attacks from the party.

  • Reduced resource costs for Mind Infiltrator and Scramble Minds

You'll notice that the teleportation-themed Psi Warper subclass doesn't appear in the new Psion documentation, but if you're a fan of this subclass, don't worry! Wizards of the Coast has already said that whenever Psion is released, it will probably include Psi Warper with exactly the same features as before, as it has already received high scores in its first playtest.

How the updated Psion compares to other D&D 2024e classes

Overall, these changes enhance psion's greatest strengths: its extensive build paths, generous auxiliary resources, and numerous built-in customizations. This makes it a serious contender for its closest opponents. dungeons and dragons' Wizard, the only intelligent full caster. Wizards offer a lot of customization thanks to the spellbook mechanic and extensive spell lists, but they still rely on spell slots to use that customization and lack practical class features at most levels. Sion's Discipline gives you many powerful options that don't require spell slots, whether you're in combat or not.

wizard D&D That would probably be a better point of comparison. Metamagic allows a wizard to rival the flexibility and customization of a Scion, while Sorcery Points act as a secondary resource that fuels powerful class and subclass features. However, magic points have some controversial weaknesses that psionic energy dice do not. Sorcerers must sacrifice spell slots to regain sorcery points on a regular basis, unlike the Scion's completely independent dice. Psionic Restoration is superior to Magic Restoration in many situations, restoring more resources in less time. The Sorcerer's level 20 abilities seem more powerful overall, but there is still a clear rivalry between these classes.

Scion can do anything he wants

baldur's gate 3 bard busker achievement is rarer than honor mode.

Scions most resemble wizards and sorcerers, but fans of other classes should not overlook Scions either. It has many elements that make it an attractive alternative in many situations. Some examples include:

  • Psionic Disciplines are the warlock's cousin to Eldritch Invocations, providing class customization and powerful abilities that define your character both mechanically and in roleplay.

  • Bards are all too familiar with using dice pools, and can also be used to support the party in a similar way to Bardic Inspiration while also giving them access to a more aggressive spell list.

  • Playing Metamorph psion offers a darker take on the druid's shapeshifting fantasy.

According to this updated version, psion should be included in the dialogue when playing certain spellcaster classes. D&D. It's a solid all-round tool that doesn't sacrifice much in exchange for flexibility. I know I will be considering playing Scion for my next game. D&D Your personality is like that, and so should you.
