Rurouni Kenshin: How did Hokkaido Arc come about?

In 1999, Nobuhiro Watsuki revealed that he had an idea for a sequel set in Hokkaido. In 2012, he said that he wanted to draw Hokkaido before Rurouni Kenshin Yushin. But he gave up the idea entirely.

Nobuhiro Watsuki was ultimately convinced to begin work on a sequel after seeing the Rurouni Kenshin musical. Rurouni Kenshin: Hokkaido Arc finally began serialization on Jump Square in September 2017. Posters were used to promote the event around Shinjuku Station.

However, two months after publication, “Rurouni Kenshin: Hokkaido Edition” was discontinued by Shueisha. The company decided to take action after Nobuhiro Watsuki was found to be in possession of pornographic material. This news shocked the world, as the author became known as one of the world's greatest cartoonists. He also served as a mentor to other famous comics artists.

The anime adaptation of Rurouni Kenshin began airing in January 1996 and ended in 1998. This was a collaboration between multiple studios.
