Last week, we learned that Bungie would be delivering Destiny 2's final update on June 9, after which the game would receive no more new content. It's been a long time coming, but fans were hit with a one-two combo when reports surfaced that the studio had no plans for Destiny 3 and that layoffs could follow.
It's not yet clear whether this is due to declining interest in the series or because Bungie wants to focus solely on marathons. Whatever the case, fans have already labeled the new Extraction shooter a “Destiny killer.” In fact, the community has even created a petition urging Sony to greenlight Destiny 3, which may garner more signatures than Marathon's maximum number of concurrent players.

As Insider Gaming discovered, the petition is asking Sony to develop Destiny 3 and has 1,74,502 verified signatures at the time of writing. “The desire for new adventures, fresh storylines, and innovative gameplay features is evident among all players,” the petition reads. “Destiny 3 will not only fulfill this need, but expand the horizons of what is possible within this universe.”
As for Marathon's player numbers, Bungie's Insider sources and Forbes' Paul Tassi said the game currently has a 2:1 split between Steam and consoles. This suggests that marathon participant numbers likely peaked during the opening weekend at around 130,000 to 150,000, although exact numbers are unknown.
Of course, just because more people signed the petition than Marathon's maximum player count doesn't mean Destiny 3 will have more players when it launches. Nonetheless, it's interesting to see that there is still a dedicated fan base for the game despite the past few updates being disappointing.
