The newly confirmed Mario Kart game for Nintendo Switch 2 appears to be a major improvement over its predecessor.
The January 16th announcement trailer confirmed that the upcoming console will have additional buttons. Previous Switch 2 leaks gave us the exact shape and location of the new keys, but the actual keys are not labeled “C”. Instead, the square button appears almost completely featureless. It's possible that the console's prototype actually had a C button, as sources testifying to the presence of the letter “C” were accurate about other aspects of the Switch 2, but Nintendo decided to do away with that label ahead of the announcement.
One Nintendo Switch 2 leak correctly predicted that the new button would lack a 'C'.
The only source that can accurately predict what the new buttons will look like is OnLeaks, which shared an accurate 360-degree render of the Switch 2 a week ahead of the console's official announcement. However, even the famous consumer electronics leaker had no information about the purpose of the button next to the home key.
The button's nondescript design doesn't give any clues as to what its function is, but someone may have already figured it out. Dataminers examining the latest version of Switch OS recently suggested that the additional buttons will be used for chat-related features. This theory is based on some references to “Campus” found in Nintendo's latest firmware. Campus is said to be a feature that includes both voice chat and group chat for Nintendo Switch Online subscribers. This discovery raises the possibility that the C button on the Switch 2 prototype stands for “Chat.”
More information about the mysterious button will likely be revealed no later than April 2025. A Switch 2-focused Nintendo Direct is scheduled for April 2, followed by a series of hands-on preview events that Nintendo will be holding around the world. , giving fans a chance to try out the upcoming device early.
