Switch 2 is getting more expensive

After months of speculation, Nintendo has announced the following: switch 2 Prices are rising all over the world. Rising component costs have put pressure on hardware manufacturers over the past year, but some products have resisted major changes. Unfortunately, the Nintendo Switch 2 is no longer in that category and will likely get more expensive before the end of the year.

It may be disappointing, but the crash isn't surprising. Analysts have been suggesting for some time that the ongoing RAM shortage could lead to higher prices for the console, and it was recently reported that investors are putting pressure on Nintendo to increase the price of the Switch 2 considering the current market volatility. Still, the company weathered the macroeconomic storm for months without charging consumers more for their consoles, but that time is now over.

Nintendo raises Switch 2 prices in several countries

In a May 8 press release, Nintendo announced that it would be increasing the price of the Switch 2 due to “changing market conditions” in several countries. This includes a $50 increase in the US, bringing the total price of the console to $499.99, $50 in Canada, €30 in Europe, and 10,000 yen in Japan. While many of these changes are smaller than last year's original Switch price increase in terms of percentage change, it's still a disappointing development for anyone who was planning on buying a Switch 2 but hasn't yet. However, these changes take effect on May 25, 2026 in Japan, and September 1, 2026 in the US, Canada, and Europe, so you still have time to purchase the console while it costs less.

Interestingly, the relative change was much larger in Japan than in any other region. However, the Switch 2 has been cheaper in Japan to begin with, so it makes sense that this region would see the biggest increase as production costs rise. Japan is also the only country other than Switch 2 where additional price changes apply. The original Switch, Switch Lite, and Switch OLED models will all become more expensive nationwide starting May 25, followed by a Nintendo Switch Online subscription in July.

Nintendo hasn't specified the exact reason for this change, but it's almost certainly due to a component shortage, at least in part. Rising RAM costs and reduced availability have impacted several other hardware companies, and while Nintendo initially said it had enough inventory to withstand the disruption, the market has yet to calm down. Micron has predicted that RAM shortages could persist beyond 2026, and given how Nintendo raised prices after “considering its global business outlook,” it seems likely that the gaming giant will agree.

These adjustments mean that every major console company has increased the prices of its flagship systems in the past year. The Xbox Series It's an unfortunate situation with no end in sight, so anyone looking to buy a new console might want to do so quickly.
