PS Plus adds too many sports games to My Dollar.

As a kid, I would have been amazed at how financially accessible games had become. This may sound strange. New games and video game consoles are eventually becoming more expensive all the time, but with the advent of services like playstation plus And with Game Pass, access to hundreds of titles is just a matter of a relatively small monthly fee. This brings a number of different challenges, especially for smaller developers and publishers trying to make money, but it's definitely a net positive for the average consumer.

I use Xbox Game Pass on PC and PlayStation Plus Extra on PS5, so I understand the ins and outs of these services, and I'm not shy about saying one service is better than the other. In fact, despite Xbox's recent struggles, Game Pass is still superior to the PS Plus catalog thanks to its pure and focused quality. That said, Game Pass has a higher density of worthwhile games, while PS Plus, while still great in many ways, suffers more from niche or underwhelming titles. Nowhere is this more evident than in the numerous sports games on the service, which in my opinion are basically just filler items.

Xbox Game Pass Wall Game Ownership

There's still one huge wall that Xbox Game Pass can't overcome.

Xbox Game Pass offers quite a few benefits to gamers, but it has one major barrier to being a leader in the gaming market.

Traditional sports games are some of the least exciting games on the market.

I'm not sure if this is controversial, but it is especially true for sports games, especially those from legacy franchises like these: crazy crazy and NBA 2KVery uninteresting. Don't misunderstand. It can be fun. I've played it countless times. 2K I grew up with friends and still do sometimes. But they also want to be very cynical and creative. These games are the culmination of an outdated, consumer-hostile annual release cycle and all the problems that come with it.

There are obvious problems with the following major sports franchises: crazy crazy They basically release the same game every year, for $70 each and with tons of microtransactions. But such franchises are also characterized by a surprising lack of quality and ambition in other ways that aren't immediately recognizable. For example, almost any task is possible, including editing, acting, directing, character animation, and writing. NBA 2K MyCareer often sucks. Even though the series features big-name filmmakers like Spike Lee and big-name actors like Idris Elba, they still feel low-effort and obligatory. As if it's there because audiences expect a standalone campaign, not because anyone actually wants to make it.

Maybe you're not really interested in that kind of thing and just want to play a few games with friends or online. I don't resent it, but consider this. Shortcomings like bad MyCareer are emblematic of the broader lack of effort on behalf of these franchises. If you actually want to play the standard multiplayer modes on the field, court, etc., you may not feel the effects of this lack of effort at first. But after years of using the same mechanical framework and features, even these basic modes start to feel cheap, despite the fact that these games actually demand more and more money from their player base with each release.

Sports games on PlayStation Plus offer little value to subscribers.

Sports games have been added to PlayStation Plus in the past six months

  • EA Sports FC 26
  • Football Manager 26
  • Crew Motorfest
  • Captain Tsubasa: Rise of New Champions
  • Madden NFL 26
  • rugby 25
  • Test Drive Unlimited Solar Crown
  • The Art of Rally
  • Expeditions: Mudrunner Games
  • Moto GP 25
  • EA Sports WRC 24

Pay close attention to what I call “traditional” or “legacy” sports games. The title usually contains the last two digits of the year. A surprising number of these games will be released across the various tiers of PS Plus after December 2025, suggesting a growing trend. We're not sure, but it feels like more of these games are being added to expand the library and compete with similar on-demand services rather than actually increasing the value of the service itself.

The reason I say this is because sports games have historically experienced much faster price declines than other video games. take Madden NFL 26for example. If you go to GameStop's website, you'll see that you can buy a digital version of the game for just $14, which was originally released less than a year ago for $70. Considering that, it's even more surprising. Madden NFL 26 essentially the same Madden NFL 25GameStop is selling them new for just $7.

Most PS Plus subscribers are looking for the best bang for their buck, so the increasing number of sports game additions is somewhat concerning. In the end, these assembly line releases don't offer the same value as games like these. Horizon Forbidden West and Wuchang: Fallen Feather. It's disappointing to see so many deals offering $15 a month PlayStation Plus Extra membership and $10 a month Essential subscription.

I think PlayStation Plus is still a good product, but I feel like the excitement is waning every time I see a sports game added to the catalog. Aside from the element of monetary value, the annual sports game is creatively redundant, uninspired, and generally the antithesis of what you're looking for on a platform like PS Plus. There are two main reasons why I subscribe to PS Plus. This is to save money by playing expensive games at lower prices and to enjoy unique and diverse gaming experiences. Basically sports games FIFA, EA Sports FCand crazy crazyNone of these goals are met.
