Crimson Desert has garnered attention as one of the most anticipated and ambitious games of 2026, and for many players it has delivered on that and more. Despite serious flaws at launch, Pearl Abyss has released 10 major updates in just three months, with several patches released in the weeks leading up to launch. Despite being a single-player experience, the frequency of updates more closely mirrors what you'd expect from a live service title, reminiscent of Pearl Abyss' experience working on Black Desert.
I spoke with Will Powers at Summer Game Fest to learn more about the team's breakneck update pace, design philosophy, and plans to bring gameplay parity to characters like Damiane and Oongka.
The art of listening to players' opinions
Before the conversation even began, a question that kept popping up in the community: How does Pearl Abyss push out these updates so quickly? Well, it's in the company's DNA at this point, thanks to years of experience developing Black Desert.
Crimson Desert may be a single-player experience developed by a separate team, but its core principles apply throughout the game. “The DNA of the company is inherently a live service, so even though this is a single-player game, it doesn’t change the core identity of who we are as a developer and how we want to support the community,” Powers said.
In other words, the Black Desert team has been releasing weekly updates for over 11 years. Given this precedent, it's no surprise that Crimson Desert's team has responded quickly to player feedback with a series of rapid updates, ranging from bug fixes to large-scale quality of life changes like storage system improvements.
So how do you decide which feedback to act on? Powers isn't quick to reveal the team's secrets, but he did provide a glimpse behind the development curtain. “We listen carefully to all the feedback that comes to us, but we maintain the DNA of the game,” says Powers. “This is very important because it can be very easy to listen to minority voices and let them shape the game and lose the heart of the game again.”
Although he didn't provide specifics, Powers made it clear that the team reviews feedback from multiple sources, so if you'd like to write a letter, your feedback may be incorporated into future updates.
A bright future for Damiane, Oongka, and the Crimson Desert DLC
Another reason Pearl Abyss has been so quick to address players' concerns is because many of them are already aligned with the internal sentiment. But with the major issues now out of the way, Powers explains how the studio is acting on its own vision for its upcoming projects. “I think the impression of development after the first launch was that it was very reactionary. This is us taking back control.”
On June 2, Pearl Abyss released its third quarter roadmap detailing major updates expected to be added by September. However, there is no set date as teams may be ready ahead of schedule. That's not surprising, considering the hot update pace so far. “If they want to develop faster, I’m not going to stop them,” Powers says. Pearl Abyss' main focus is to release updates when they are ready rather than hitting specific deadlines.
Damiane and Oongka's names stood out among the exciting changes planned for the roadmap. Because these party members have been largely in Kliff's shadow up to this point. Players struggled to justify playing as Oongka or Damiane instead of Kliff due to notable limitations, such as the lack of abilities required to solve puzzles. “Gameplay parity is the ultimate goal,” says Powers. So while we won't see Damiane or Oongka wrestling for the title of protagonist from Kliff, all three characters will be on equal footing when it comes to experiencing the world and its various puzzles.
The changes to Damiane, Oongka, and key cutscenes are one of the most exciting updates on the roadmap, but there's an even bigger update coming up: DLC. So far we have only received. updateAnd despite how massive the overhaul is, Powers says the DLC promises more than just these updates. “This will be substantially different in scope, scale and size. What it means beyond that has not yet been discussed.”
Crimson Desert is constantly evolving and growing. By adding a baby wyvern mount that can fly almost anywhere or expanding key characters like Damian and Unkar, Pearl Abyss refuses to let yesterday's mistakes become tomorrow's failures.
Our commitment to consistent updates has set the tone for a rapidly evolving single-player experience that redefines our expectations. They've already added some unexpected treats like a pinball machine, so there's no telling what other surprises await.
