Luffy's Potential Explained for Gear 6

This article contains spoilers for One Piece Final Saga.

Key Takeaways

  • Luffy's current highest power is Gear 5, and his awakened Devil Fruit form greatly enhances his abilities.
  • As Luffy said Gear 5 is his best Devil Fruit form, Gear 6 is unlikely to exist.
  • Luffy's future growth will focus on improving his Haki abilities, which will be crucial for the battles ahead in One Piece's Final Saga.

Luffy's main character one pieceCurrently one of the most powerful characters in the series. After defeating Kaido in the Wano Country arc, Luffy went on to become one of the Four Emperors of the Sea, which certainly made him a powerful pirate. At Wano, he grew significantly in terms of strength, and has continued to work on increasing his strength ever since.

Loki has an insane bounty in One Piece. His bounty is very special.

Currently, Luffy is not at his prime, but he is very powerful, especially with the awakening of Gear 5. Naturally, fans are wondering if Luffy will actually be able to unleash his powers beyond Gear 5 and access Gear 6 in the future. The answer to this question is pretty easy, but some fans may still need to elaborate on it. That is the purpose of this article.

Luffy's current equipment abilities make him a Yonko.

  • Luffy has mastered using the Devil Fruit
  • Luffy awakened his devil fruit in Wano.

As fans know, Luffy is a user of Hitohitonomi (model: Nika). This is a very powerful ability, also known by the fake name Gomu Gomunomi, as the government wanted to hide its true identity. No matter what fans call this Devil Fruit, the idea behind it is simple. Luffy's devil fruit gave him a rubber-like body, and that rubber-like body allowed him to fight to the best of his ability. Given that this is the mythical Zoan, Luffy's combat power will improve tremendously if he uses this Devil Fruit correctly. Among other things, this fruit improves Luffy's endurance, durability, and all other physical aspects.

More importantly, this ability allows Luffy to fight freely and makes him a warrior of liberation. Using this Devil Fruit will unleash Luffy's creativity to the fullest and he will always have unique abilities. For example, Luffy developed Gear Second around the Enies Lobby Arc along with Gear Third. Luffy was able to pump blood throughout his body faster, and because he was made of rubber, he could handle the extra blood pressure without actually dying. This gave Luffy enormous power. That's certainly not all. Luffy also created a way to inflate his bones to make his limbs look like giants. This allowed him to increase his power output and deliver devastating blows to his enemies.

After learning Haki, Luffy combined it with his Devil Fruit abilities, eventually creating Gear 4, which operates on the concept of muscle inflation, which Luffy calls a muscle balloon. By inflating his muscles and assuming a gigantic form, Luffy can use both incredible strength and speed to take down his enemies. Gear 4 also has different forms such as Snakeman and Tankman. Essentially the concept is the same, the only difference is that Snake Man focuses more on speed and sacrifices defense, while Tankman boosts defense and sacrifices speed altogether. Bounce Man is Luffy's ideal form and the intermediate form he uses when entering Gear 4.

All of these powers are certainly impressive, but Luffy's greatest power and one piece It is definitely Gear 5. This is something Luffy did not train himself to do. This is the result of Luffy's body and mind finally catching up to his abilities. This only happened in the Wano Country arc after Luffy died in battle with Kaido. At this point, his Devil Fruit finally awakens, giving him a unique transformation that fans know as Gear 5.

Gear 5 is a very dangerous ability and one that has not been seen in the One Piece world for 800 years. It is the true power of the Nika Fruit and its ability to make Luffy fight with great freedom and with a smile on his face. Most importantly, it further strengthens his body and allows him to unleash his imagination to do anything he wants.

There's only one thing that stops Luffy from being like this: his imagination. You can do whatever you want, as long as you can imagine it. This means that this is truly the pinnacle of One Piece freedom.

Can Luffy learn Gear 6?

Gear 6 is unlikely to happen in One Piece

Fishman Island Remake Luffy

Answering the question of whether Luffy will continue to learn Gear 6 is quite simple. Gear 6 will never exist and Gear 5 will be the pinnacle of Luffy. This is down to the fact that Luffy himself called Gear 5 the pinnacle of his power. Of course, this doesn't mean that Luffy won't grow in terms of strength, but it's closer to saying that Luffy has reached the peak of his Devil Fruit form. Luffy awakened the fruit, which means Gear 6 cannot exist. Gear 5 will be Luffy's pinnacle and final form.

This explains why One Piece: Blackbeard vs. Shanks is happening soon.

I'm looking forward to the showdown between Shanks and Blackbeard in One Piece. This fight could happen much sooner than expected.

Moreover, there's still a lot of intrigue in Gear 5, and fans have yet to utilize its full potential. It will take some time for Luffy to fully learn and get used to the power of Gear 5. So far, Luffy is struggling to keep this up for long. This means there is still work to be done. That means One Piece is already included in the Final Saga, and Luffy doesn't have enough time to develop new Gears either. Therefore, Gear 5 can be seen as Luffy's prime, which means that Gear 6 does not exist in the future of the story. That doesn't mean Luffy can't become stronger. Because he absolutely will.

Luffy's next powerhouse will revolve around hockey

Luffy's Hockey Needs More Growth

Luffy will most likely not grow in terms of his Devil Fruit abilities, but he definitely will grow in terms of Haki. As pointed out in the Egghead Island Arc, Luffy has never reached the peak of his Haki abilities. Although he has advanced form of all three types of hockey, he still needs to improve them tremendously. Luffy can't see the future as well as Shanks, and most importantly, he can't use the Conqueror's Haki Infusion just like him. Luffy has already reached a certain level that Oda highlighted.

As seen in the Egghead arc, when Joy Boy's Haki was freed by Emet, the Elders were all knocked out of their demonic forms and Saturn's summoning was also canceled. This is something Luffy cannot do on his own. This essentially means that Luffy's Haki must reach this level to have any chance of fighting people like the Elders and Imu and defeating them.

Oda has clearly set goals for Luffy to achieve when it comes to hockey, where he should focus all his attention and how he needs to grow in the future. That said, this power has nothing to do with Gear 5 and we'll see him grow in a very different way. So while Gear 6 certainly won't exist in One Piece, it will grow dramatically in the Final Saga by improving Haki.

One Piece can be read via Viz Media. The series is officially available for fans to read for free through the Shonen Jump and Manga Plus apps. The release date of One Piece 1132, the next chapter of One Piece, is scheduled for November 17, 2024.
