In the latest episode, the boys taunt us one last time.

The following contains heavy spoilers for Season 5, Episode 4 of The Boys.

Billy Butcher and his crew went to an abandoned Vought facility to look for V-One in this week's episode of The Boys. Upon arrival, not only did they discover a body that looked like it had been lying in The Last Of Us, but Hughie recognized the similarities.

The Boys' quest to find a way to stop and kill Homelander began this week as both sides headed to Fort Harmony. Fort Harmony is the one remaining place on Earth where V-One, a prototype of the volatile compound V that could make Homelander immortal, may still be present.

I've seen bodies like that before.

The facility is littered with corpses, with vines and branches growing over them and clinging to the walls. Not only that, but when they comment on the condition of the corpses left behind by Vought, they mention the spores they release and say that this can affect how the characters behave. This all felt very Last of Us, so the writers felt they had to acknowledge it.

Frenchie concludes that the bodies are leftover remnants of a battle in which people left inside the facility killed each other. An amateur scientist determines that the cause is toxoplasmosis, an actual parasite commonly found in cat poop.

“If V-One spills into the groundwater, it could mutate the plants. Their spores fill us with rage. We kill each other. Ta-da, we're plant food for these vines,” Frenchie explained, to which Hughie responded, “Okay, like in The Last of Us?” Even if The Boyz used cat poop parasites instead of fungi, we were all thinking that.

“Dead walking with mushrooms”

This is confirmation that The Last of Us game exists in The Boys universe. Perhaps it was an ad-lib from Hughie actor Jack Quaid that the writers decided to leave. Quaid is a huge video game fan who recently made it very clear that if we're still getting a BioShock adaptation, he wants to be a part of it.

Impromptu or not, Frenchie responded to Hughie's TLOU comment with a funny jab that his character played the game too. “No, it’s just The Walking Dead with mushrooms.” Just kidding, I'm sure there are people who were voted out of The Last of Us because they share those feelings.

Don't expect TLOU to continue throughout the second half of The Boys' final season. Episode 4 was effectively a bottle episode, although not everything technically happened in one place. Not only was Fort Harmony a dead end in the race to find V-One, but Frenchie tricked Soldier Boy into killing Quinn, an infected former member of the veteran team of heroes whose facility was infected with toxoplasmosis.
