Given that costs of everything are rising, with the PS3/Vita Store closing and disc production ending in 2028, it's not surprising that a PS Plus price increase is clearly on the table, but that might not be bad news. PS Plus price increases are determined by the cost and value of the service.
At a recent company meeting (and first reported by Insider Gaming), Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO and President Hideaki Nishino, Studio Business CEO Hermen Hulst, and Senior Vice President of Finance and Corporate Development Lynn Azar were asked questions. In other words, PlayStation is working to strike a balance between the value of the service (what it offers) and the cost to consumers through a variety of factors focused on improving PS Plus' content efficiency and profitability. Although it was not revealed who responded, one of the executives added:
“PS Plus offers strong value to players, and we continually balance that value with customer costs. We are using a variety of levers, including pricing, tier mix and content acquisition efficiencies, to improve profitability. Our upper tier now accounts for 40% of our subscribers, reflecting strong demand for our service. PS Plus remains a key driver of profitability and we achieved record-high PS Plus profitability in FY2025.”
On the one hand, it will come as a relief to those who are concerned about the expected price of the PlayStation 6 console, changes to how games are distributed, and everything else going on in the industry. Ultimately, this is the highest profitability ever in fiscal year 2025. This is a boilerplate answer that looks good for now, but may change at any time.
It's worth noting that neither Sony nor PlayStation have officially announced anything about the PlayStation 6, but Xbox's studio closure leaves PlayStation with its own structural issues (like the closure of Bluepoint), and plans may not be in place until 2028. Now comes an announcement that everyone will want to see. Perhaps things could change between now and the PS6's reported 2027 release, but it's not something to hold your breath about.
