2023 dead space I have a tricky relationship with remakes. I've seen it at full price several times and left in every case. Because even with all the graphical fidelity and gameplay updates, $60 was too much to put down based on a nostalgic feeling I haven't had since I was about 10 years old. However, as it turns out, dead space Remaking it for $6, 90% off through the Steam Summer Sale, is a much easier conversation to have with myself.
dead space When EA Motive released this product back in early 2023, it received very positive reviews, and there was no doubt that it was good, at least after those reviews came out. My hesitation had nothing to do with quality and everything to do with the strange tax we all pay to revisit something we only half remember. But $6 feels like highway robbery, and after playing a few hours I can confidently say that this game justifies its price.

Remakes are a hard sell based on memory alone
Before you jump into a stretch, it's worth acknowledging that remakes occupy a unique commercial space. Because remakes require you to spend the money of a new release on an experience you've already had. Personally, I liked the original. dead space When I played this game back in 2010 (though I was certainly too young to have played it), it never took a place in my pantheon of games like it did for others from that era. I remembered vague hallways, dismantling systems, and almost nothing else. That's a poor basis for a $60 purchase.
But the same goes for remakes. Despite publishers' claims that their original titles are worth reimagining and modernizing for hardware that can finally do them justice, nostalgia can be a very unreliable currency. That said, I kept the remake on my wishlist and treated it as a stumbling block for a rainy day. Every time a sale brought me down a few dollars, I did the math and decided the discount still wasn't steep enough. But it's on sale now dead space It's appropriately absurd, and I can say two things with certainty: dead space It got a co-signature and in this case it's worth more than the price of admission.
The tighter horror of Dead Space Remake is spot on.
I spent a few hours on 2023 to get more and more clarity. dead space Already, it's really great. The remake sharpens the original's focus on horror and dread in a way that feels pointed, and its certain fatness and slant on atmosphere expertly defines this game as part of the original trilogy in a way that the original didn't. USG Ishimura remains one of the best haunted houses ever built by the medium, and Motive clearly understood this.
My hesitation has nothing to do with quality and everything to do with the strange tax we all pay to revisit something we only half remember.
I have extraordinary confidence dead spaceIt's a genre-blending horror element that many modern survival horror games have lost in their rush to redefine the genre. dead space It wants to surprise you, and builds almost all of its systems around that goal with an almost monastic discipline, but it never neglects boss fights and set pieces. And playing in 2026, it feels like the things I took for granted a decade ago, the things that set it apart even back in the original, have been rediscovered here, at least in the AAA space.
This may sound like a lot to unpack, but I really want to say this: dead space What's most noticeable is how easy the whole thing feels to read, with the diegetic menus, procedural layout, and sharp audio design all providing the same sense of place. There are no clear loading screens, nothing bloated or updated here for the checklist, and the pace breathes in a way that big-budget horror no longer allows. The game is concise, deliberate, and scary. As I play the original, I find myself rediscovering memories of it rather than associating it with other 'modern' survival horror experiences.
That feeling of rediscovery is the best compliment I can give this remake. Because as long as I can remember, I've always dead space 2 To become the pinnacle of a franchise; The action, visual appeal, and gameplay design have been scaled up almost completely. I even preferred the more controversial ones. dead space 3In my opinion, that's because the co-op campaign and sheer ambition are vastly underrated, despite the microtransactions and weak story still being indefensible. But as I played this remake, I realized that the game was now part of an incredibly experimental trilogy (each game attempted three different tones), and with each session I found myself empathizing with this first tone more and more.

Best Steam Summer Sale
Of everything I've seen in this year's Steam Summer Sale, this is both the deepest and most rewarding discount I've seen, and that combination alone makes it a definite recommendation. There's something special about buying a great, up-to-date, fully featured game for roughly the price of a sandwich. In this case, I'm even more satisfied that “maybe someday” has turned into a sincere “yes.”
The cynic in me knows that discounts this big are simply patient publishers profiting from the long tail of their back catalogue. In this case it's true. 2023 dead space It failed to meet EA's sales expectations. But I don't mind one bit because the math is overwhelmingly in my favor and I don't need another remake despite the quality of this one. dead space 2. Generally speaking, I want this industry to move forward rather than backward. So a two-year-old $6 remake doesn't just leave you wanting more next time, it strikes me as a rare deal where almost all of the value flows to the player.
Dead Space is worth every penny
To be fair to the remake, none of this is a complaint about the original asking price. Because according to all objective measurements: dead space Got that sticker price. EA Motive has created a faithful, polished, and scary game, and the strong reviews it received in 2023 were well deserved. Quality has never been an issue between us.
USG Ishimura remains one of the best haunted houses ever built by the medium, and Motive clearly understood this.
And I'm glad I got to experience this now. It really is. But the honest truth is that nostalgia works too often in this industry, and there's definitely a price ceiling. There are a few exceptions (I'm only human), but for me that upper limit is a long way south of $60. Still for 6 dollars dead space It's easy to buy and probably the easiest thing you've made all summer. So far, visiting Ishimura again has been worth every last penny.
