i am a little stupid switch 2 Editions, especially if they're for games you couldn't get enough of when they were originally released. I already upgraded my copy. That game is none other than Monolith Soft. Xenoblade Chronicles 2And while it may not be the highest-rated game in the series, it's a great JRPG that's finally officially worth playing again when the Switch 2 edition releases on July 30, 2026.
Xenoblade Chronicles 2 It wasn't the first game in the series, but it was the first one that captured me. When it was released in 2017, it established itself as one of those games that could easily keep me up past midnight, willing me to lose sleep despite having to wake up early for work the next day. Don't misunderstand. I understand why this is one of the more polarizing entries in the series, and I'm not trying to argue with any of the criticism. But as a JRPG, this game is one of the most memorable games I've ever played. It has a world I loved exploring, a cast I truly grew attached to, and a story that becomes more rewarding the deeper you dive. now Xenoblade Chronicles 2 The Switch 2 edition promises to give the game the technical treatment it's always deserved, and it feels like the perfect opportunity to appreciate it again.

for me, Xenoblade Chronicles 2 Alrest was memorable more than anything else because it was such a fascinating world to explore. Entire civilizations live on the back of massive titans drifting across an endless sea of clouds, and each civilization feels so different from the other that reaching the other is anything but routine. I could be wandering the wide fields of Gormott one minute and exploring the narrow streets and industrial machinery of Mor Ardain the next, constantly stopping to see what was lurking somewhere in the obvious path.

Monolith Soft also knew exactly how to make the area feel much larger and more dangerous than it first appeared. High-level enemies would wander around aimlessly wherever I didn't have anything to do yet, so exploring could go from peaceful to terrifying the moment I spotted something huge staring in my direction. Finding new landmarks, secret locations, treasures, and paths I missed made it worth returning to old Titan long after the story had progressed.
Xenoblade Chronicles 2's blade system gave me another reason to keep experimenting. Every driver could be equipped with a variety of blades that changed their weapons, roles, abilities, and elemental options, which meant building a party that included a lot more than just choosing my three favorite characters. I could spend an embarrassing amount of time reorganizing settings, looking at affinity charts, and trying to figure out how to chain attacks without completely ruining everything that was working five minutes ago.

Xenoblade Chronicles 2's combat admittedly takes a while to discover why it's so good. Early combat can feel slow, the tutorial isn't always particularly helpful, and anyone expecting immediate action may wonder why Rex seems so dedicated between attacks. But once driver combos, blade combos, elemental orbs, and chain attacks start to fit together, combat becomes a lot more satisfying than it first appears.
The cast also put in a lot of effort. Rex may not be everyone's favorite. Xenoblade But his optimism made sense with characters who were carrying much more baggage than he initially understood. Pyra, Mythra, Nia, Tora, Mòrag, and Zeke gradually became the group I really cared about, which made the second half of the story much more difficult than I expected at the start of the journey.

A world built on giant, living Titans shouldn't look so blurry that it sometimes feels like you've misplaced your glasses. So the visual and performance improvements in the Switch 2 edition have me tempted back.

Honestly, I think 60 frames per second would be enough. Xenoblade Chronicles 2 With bustling environments, massive enemies, flashy blade special effects, and combat that can fill the screen with effects, doubling down on your original target will make almost everything better. Combine this with the TV's 4K output and 1080p in portable mode, and the Alrest will finally look just as good off the dock as I remember.
Improved cutscenes are a bigger problem than you might think. Xenoblade Chronicles 2 It's filled with long story scenes and large-scale action sequences, so the smoother, clearer presentation makes the more cinematic moments much more enjoyable. I already remember some late-game scenes looking amazing despite the hardware, and I'm eager to see what it will look like after the upgrade.

Nintendo is also giving returning players completely new things to enjoy, rather than relying solely on technological improvements. The new rare blades include another quest, and the action combat mode allows players to take direct control of the blades sent on mercenary missions during mercenary squad battles. I've already spent the entire game watching Blades support drivers, so controlling them directly sounds like some kind of weird bonus mode that might keep it from getting too familiar on a second playthrough.
Even Pyra and Mythra are receiving new gear designs exclusive to this edition. A new outfit isn't going to change a game you've already played for dozens of hours. But I'll never complain about another reason to change a party member's appearance. Actually, cosmetics in RPGs are a huge deal to me. Just because I feel more engaged when my party looks the way I want it to.

The problem was finding a reason to commit to playing yet another massive JRPG when there were already so many new games fighting for that time.
Xenoblade Chronicles 2's Switch 2 edition is officially telling us why. Alrest will look sharper, combat will be smoother, cutscenes will be cleaned up, and there will be new quests and battles awaiting players who already know the journey. I lost a lot of sleep.
