To access competitive mode you will need: Complete First User Experience (FTUE) and win 50 games in Quick Play (complete the Competitive Play Qualifying Challenge). FTUE is basically a generic FPS tutorial that shows you the basics of the game. Quick play is what other games call casual or unranked matches.

You can track your progress in the Competitive Preliminary Challenge by going to: Main Menu > Challenge > Lifetime.

This change will be introduced after October 4, 2022, so new players who are jumping into the game but don't know much about heroes or gameplay won't ruin matches for more experienced players.
