Helldivers 2 Fan Spots Mistake in Intro Cutscene 7 Months Ago

Key Contents

  • I'm going to spoil the opening cinematic for Helldivers 2. There was a hidden bug in it since the game was released.
  • As first discovered by Reddit user Old_Opposite5125, almost all of the rifles featured in the game's intro cutscenes have no magazines, meaning they don't contain any bullets.
  • While one could argue that this was intentional, Helldivers 2 director Johan Pilestedt confirmed that it was an oversight that even those with military training overlooked.

Helldivers 2 has been in players’ hands for just over seven months, so you’d think any potential mistakes in the game’s cutscenes would have been discovered and reported by now. Even then, developer Arrowhead would have double- and triple-checked the cutscenes to make sure they looked cool and polished before release. But despite all of this oversight, a mistake made its way into the game’s intro cutscene.

This mistake was first spotted by Reddit user Old_Opposite5125 (thanks GamesRadar), who noticed that in the opening cinematic of Helldivers 2, almost every weapon the soldiers are using is out of ammunition. You can physically see this as almost every rifle in the close-up shots has an empty slot where a magazine should be placed. This is most evident in the shot where the soldier gives the camera a thumbs up while his friends are setting down Terminids in the background.

Helldivers 2 Developer Confirms Intro Cutscene Mistake Wasn't Intentional

It's such a bizarre omission that some could argue it was an intentional choice by Arrowhead, but that theory was quashed when Helldivers 2 lead Johan Pilestedt discovered Old_Opposite5125's post and confirmed that it was a mistake.

“I… hahaha. I couldn't help but notice this,” Philestet said. “I don't know how many times I reviewed this intro, but even though we have a few people on our team who have military training, no one noticed. This was a mistake. It's crazy that it took over two years for someone to point it out!”

Some fans haven't been able to stop themselves from making it an intentional choice in their headcanon. It makes sense, considering the intro cutscene was intended as propaganda and had an overall untrue tone from the start. If Super Earth actually killed a man's family in front of him for a promotional video, that would be pretty harsh. Or maybe it's just Illuminate's trick to turn us against each other. I won't be fooled.
