Former PlayStation CEO, Steam Machine ‘difficult to recommend’

Shuhei Yoshida, former president of Sony SIE Worldwide Studios, said the Steam Machine: valve Notable initial price and performance issues made it “hard to recommend”. However, Yoshida said Valve's latest device has some advantages.

Steam Machine is Valve's latest attempt to combine PC gaming and console experiences. Powered by a custom AMD Zen 4 processor with Radeon RDNA 3 graphics, Steam Machine's form factor and compatibility with a wide range of Steam titles are among its key selling points. However, the Steam Machine's initial launch price was $1,049, which was $150 more than the PS5 Pro. As of this writing, the Steam Machine is sold out in Valve's stores, which has led to Valve's portable PCs being resold by scalpers on eBay for ridiculously high amounts.

Valve Shuts Third Party Steam Machine Case

Valve has officially ordered third-party accessory manufacturers to stop selling custom Steam Machine cases based on one of its most popular attributes.

Shuhei Yoshida shares his personal steam machine review.

After purchasing his own Steam Machine, the former Sony boss wrote a review on Twitter, listing the pros and cons of Valve's portable PC. Yoshida said that the Steam Machine's high initial price makes it “difficult to recommend to people” other than for research purposes. Yoshida added that the Steam Machine's graphics performance is, in a word, “meh.” Yoshida said that the Steam Machine recommends a native resolution setting of 1080p compared to the 4K performance advertised by Valve. After the Steam Machine launched, Valve quietly updated the device's Steam page to reveal that some games will be able to achieve 4K via AMD's FSR upscaling technology.

Yoshida also compared Steam Machine's 1080p recommendation to the PS4, which first released in 2013. Yoshida said that some games on the Steam Machine have longer load times than on other systems, even taking shader compilation into account. Steam Machine uses a solid-state drive for fast load times, but is limited to 16GB of DDR5 RAM in a single channel. Yoshida said he hopes game developers will optimize their games for the Steam Machine in the future.

In addition to his concerns, Yoshida also shared positive thoughts about the Steam Machine. Yoshida said the Steam Controller's stick is “a little looser” than he prefers, but being able to boot the Steam Machine by touching a button on the Steam Controller is a plus. Yoshida also said that the SteamOS system interface is easy to use and that he likes how the device's changeable faceplates can give the system some personality. Yoshida also praised how Valve was able to keep the Steam Machine quiet while maintaining a small form factor. Despite his concerns, Yoshida said that the fact that Steam Machine allows you to play Steam games on your TV is reason enough to keep using it.

Valve has stated that the Steam Machine's price is due to the company's unwillingness to sell the system at a loss, but this hasn't stopped the Steam Machine from receiving criticism in terms of price/performance compared to other PCs on the market. It remains to be seen what happens to Steam Machine in the long term.
