Chaos Rising, Yu-Gi-Oh's new chess-themed set, debuts more expanded art cards

Yu-Gi-Oh Battles of Legends: Glorious Gallery may have only just been released, but we're already adding yet another new set of booster cards to the game. Chaos Origins is an homage to the anime and manga, so it's familiar to many fans and features a unique overall chess theme, so no main deck monsters are included in the set.

Chaos Origins launches today (July 2nd) and features 100 new cards, including five new expansion arts available in Ultra Rare and Starlight Rare treatments. This booster set also reimagines some classic cards, making them viable for modern play. This is because many long-running TCGs often have nothing to do with old, popular cards.

The set also sees the debut of the Starlight 2.0 cards, which include visual adjustments to the Starlight Rare treatment, making the cards themselves easier to read while producing richer colors. The old gray border is also gone, replaced by a new rainbow foil border.

Expanded arts are all the rage in Yu-Gi-Oh, so five more have been released.

Expanded art cards are fairly new to Yu-Gi-Oh, but Konami isn't making duelists wait any longer for these popular new variants. The Chaos Origins booster set features five new expanded art cards. they:

  • Divine Beasts of Chaotic Fantasy
  • Magician of Dark Chaos – Black Chaos
  • Black Luster Soldier – Soldier of Light and Darkness
  • Primordial Goddess Pharah
  • ancient witness

These cards come in Ultra Rare and Starlight Rare variants respectively, and early indications are that while none of these cards can match the most expensive Glorious Gallery cards, they will still be worth hundreds of dollars.

Magician of Chaos and Black Luster Soldier are two of the cards that will be modernized within Chaos Origins. The Magician now blocks your opponent from destroying or exiled your spells and traps, can draw spells from the graveyard when summoned, and can exile one of your opponent's cards each turn.

Black Luster Soldier is not destroyed during battle, and when summoned, it banishes one of the opponent's cards and gains 1,500 attack power when it destroys an opponent's monster during battle and can then attack again.

Between the cute new Chibi cards and amazing expansion art, this new YGO set includes some very valuable Starlight Rare cards.

Classic Yami Yugi monster gets updated card

Fans of the Yu-Gi-Oh anime, manga, and TCG will be familiar with cards like Summoned Skull, Celtic Guardian, and Kuriboh. Now, all three of these cards are being revamped with new mechanics and designs for each.

Summoned Skeletons can now send a ritual spell from their hand or deck to the graveyard and then add that ritual monster to their hand.

Celtic Guardian can now force you to draw three cards before discarding two, and Kuriboh can still protect life points, but this now includes effect damage.

These are just the headlines of the new Chaos Origins booster set, but there are plenty of updates and exciting new cards to check out among the 100 additions. This release is really geared towards fans of the OG anime and manga series, but it absolutely has something for everyone, including the huge Starlight Rare chase.
