Doom can now run from Captcha

Doom revolutionized the first-person shooter genre and transformed the video game industry. But it has stayed relevant for decades thanks to its fans who have allowed it to run on just about every device you can think of. From printers to pregnancy tests, no platform is left behind to tear the devil apart.

2025 is the year I finish Doom

I've played most of the Doom games but never completed them. I believe the Dark Ages will correct that.

However, very few of these Doom “ports” are actually used. Completing a pregnancy test level will not tell you if you are pregnant or not. It looks like one of the newest places to run Doom actually serves some purpose. Instead of checking boxes with buses or traffic lights, you can prove you're not a robot by completing Doom levels.

Kill three demons to prove you are human.

Created by Vercel CEO Guillermo Rauch through the company's AI site builder, this new Captcha verification process requires you to kill three monsters to prove you're human (thanks, TechCrunch). I think I'm a robot. Because killing three monsters is really hard. In fact, I barely managed to kill a single one in about 5 or 6 attempts. Try it out for yourself here.

One comment said: “This is a secret level (E1M9) you typically encounter after E1M3. At this point in regular progression, you've found a shotgun, a chaingun, a rocket launcher, and maybe some armor. Starting this level with only a pistol is (Probably looks like UV or Nightmare difficulty) It's just begging for ass.”

Regardless of difficulty, this Doom Captcha is a lot more fun than trying to prove you're human by identifying a bike in a box or deciphering an alphanumeric code. But we can also turn the difficulty down a bit so we don't question our own senses.

I don't think we'll see this system actually implemented on any website anytime soon, and since bots can be trained to play Doom, it seems like they might not protect against AI. However, there is a chance to prevent the devil from taking over.

In Doom, one of the most iconic and influential games of all time, you take on the role of a Marine sent to a research facility on Mars. When the gates to Hell unleash hordes of demons, it's up to you to blast them into oblivion.
