Arc Raiders can be played solo, and while that's a perfectly viable way to play, there's no need to risk it alone. You can bring a friend (or a complete stranger) with you, and your chances of returning home alive will be much higher if you do so.
How to Play with Friends
While in the main menu, Scroll up/select the plus sign above the Fill Squad option. This will bring up a menu where you can invite friends, see players you've recently interacted with, check friend requests, and manage your block list.

How many players can join a party?

If you want, you can allow the game to automatically populate your team, which will then populate your group with other random players you'll be playing with.
