Not long ago, Ubisoft revealed that a Far Cry TV show was in the works, but all mention of it was dropped almost immediately. Whatever the problem was at the time, it seems to have been resolved as this announcement was made. FX has ordered a game-based series from Alien: Earth's Noah Hawley and It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia's Rob Mac.
There are no details about the upcoming show, but it looks like it will follow the anthology formula of the video game series, with each season featuring a new location, protagonist, and antagonist. Mac will also appear in the first season, but it's unclear what role he will have, considering the antagonist is the main focus in each Far Cry game.
The Far Cry TV show follows the same anthology format as the games.
“Getting to work with Noah Hawley is a dream come true,” said Mac. “Ubisoft has been incredibly generous and entrusted us with one of the most iconic video game universes in history, and through it all, our FX family has continued to encourage me with their unwavering faith and support.” Mac previously worked with Ubisoft Film & Television on Mythic Quest, which was canceled after four seasons, and also worked with FX on the Welcome to Wrexham docu-series about his football team.
Okay, a Far Cry adaptation is too much for one video game show
Let's take a moment to ask whether this is a good idea?
“What I love about the Far Cry game franchise is that it's an anthology. Each game is a variation on a theme. Likewise, each season of Fargo is a variation on a theme,” Hawley added. Like the Far Cry games, each season of the show will be “set in a new environment with a new cast of characters.”
It would be strange to see Mac take on a serious role after It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, Mythic Quest, and his generally cheerful demeanor. Perhaps he can channel his inner Nightman into the role. But if the villain from the first series hasn't been established yet, his IASIP co-star Glenn Howerton would be the perfect antagonist. The show strongly implied that he was a serial killer, and some of his performances on the comedy show were downright horrible.
