Xbox thinks exclusive games are “obsolete” thanks to Fortnite and Roblox.

Xbox is a very confusing company right now. We have no idea what the future plans are. Judging by its recent marketing campaign and price increases, you'd be forgiven for thinking the company doesn't know either. Still, we're confident that Xbox plans to launch a next-gen system alongside the PlayStation 6 (even if it's going to cost a lot of money). And there seems to be a determination to make all of the long-running exclusives playable on as many platforms as possible.

Xbox's approach to exclusivity has drawn criticism from developers and fans alike over the past year, with series like Forza Horizon, Gears of War, and Halo debuting on PlayStation. This is Xbox's strategy as it regularly becomes a best-seller on the PS5, but we don't yet know what Xbox's attitude toward exclusivity is or what its plans are going forward.

Thankfully, a recent interview with Xbox President Sarah Bond gave us more insight into some of the thinking going on at the company right now, and if you're still holding out hope that Xbox will somehow release high-quality exclusives in the future, we've got some bad news for you.

Xbox thinks exclusive games are “obsolete” thanks to Fortnite and Roblox.

“We’re really seeing people evolve beyond that,” Bond says. “The biggest games in the world are available everywhere. Call of Duty, Minecraft, Fortnite, Roblox, etc. are really what drives the gaming community. It's where people come together and build experiences, and the idea of locking games to one store or one device is outdated for most people.”

This is a somewhat strange claim. Especially when you consider that exclusive roles have never really served to attract millions of players. PlayStation and Nintendo have been using exclusives for years to sell games like Astro Bot and Donkey Kong Bananza that showcase skills and types of experiences not found on other systems.

Xbox owns Call of Duty and MInecraft, and making them widely available across all platforms makes a lot of sense, but giving up exclusives like Halo and Gears of War that won't really set the world on fire devalues the platform and makes it less attractive. No one would buy an Xbox if they could buy Xbox games. and A PlayStation exclusive from PlayStation.
