It seems xbox Gamers are having trouble playing Xbox 360 games, as some Series The Xbox Backward Compatibility Program has been providing users with a near-perfect experience for years. But a recent crash in one of Xbox's most popular features has left several customers upset.
Xbox's backwards compatibility initiative was launched for the Xbox One in 2015 after complaints from fans that the console lacked proper latest-generation support. It originally launched with 104 games, including Xbox powerhouses such as: Gears of War and mass effectWe are committed to continuing to grow the program over time. Since then, the number of games included in the program has grown to 632 for Xbox 360 and 63 for Xbox One. Unfortunately, the Xbox Backwards Compatibility Program ended in 2021, with the team citing licensing issues as a major obstacle preventing them from doing more. However, at GDC 2026, Microsoft announced that it would be reintroducing Xbox's backwards compatibility program in some capacity later this year.
Xbox fans haven't been able to play classic Xbox 360 games for months.
Unfortunately, Xbox's backwards compatibility program has run into issues, with Reddit and social media users reporting that they are unable to access their Xbox 360 library on their Xbox Series X consoles, citing connection errors with Xbox Live. Affected players say their internet connection is working properly and their Xbox Series X games are working without issues. The problem only starts when the player launches the Xbox 360 title. However, not all players appear to be affected in the same way. Some people report that Xbox 360 games do not work at all, while others report that some games work but others do not. Xbox Support released an official statement on social media saying they are actively investigating why some users are unable to “select backward compatible Xbox 360 games.”
Users in both In one Reddit thread, user GR1NTER shared a support message from Xbox, claiming that the newer console may have issues playing Xbox 360 games because it has not yet established a network link for eligibility verification and content delivery. Basically, newer consoles have not yet been verified on the appropriate servers and are more likely to cause problems than older consoles already installed on those servers. As of this writing, this has not been confirmed by an official explanation and the issue remains unresolved.
What we can explain is that Xbox 360 backward compatible games rely on legacy Xbox 360 services for eligibility verification and content delivery, and newly purchased Series X consoles will need to establish these connections anew during initial setup.
So while this primarily affects newer consoles, older or previously configured consoles where these services have already been proven may continue to work as expected. We understand how important this feature is and want to strongly ensure that this is recognized as a service-side issue and treated as a priority. We sincerely appreciate your help in reporting this issue and making it visible.
The ongoing issues with Xbox's backwards compatibility program can be very frustrating considering this is one of the console's best features. Despite all of Xbox's controversial decisions among fans in recent years, backward compatibility is the main reason Xbox fans love the Series X and S consoles. But with the Xbox Series X selling poorly recently, it's easy to see how this problem has persisted for so long. Existing Series Meanwhile, people who just bought a new console may have had issues with their Xbox 360 library, but due to their small numbers, they've been sidelined, allowing the issue to fly under the radar.
