The trigger has been found.
Dragon Age: The Veilguard is a very well-crafted game with solid optimization and minimal bugs. However, the latest patch released last week has a small but significant bug that is causing some frustration among players.
The new patch appears to occasionally convert equipped ultimates back to the class' default ultimate. It's a minor inconvenience, but not realizing the change can lead to some frustrating moments. This is exactly what happened to me during one of the game's many dragon boss fights. My Rook is a Veil Ranger rogue, and instead of firing a well-timed twin gift of Arlathan from mid-range, he backflips on the spot and throws a useless spark.
Beware of switching bugs
I'm not the only one experiencing this bug, as KulaanDoDinok's Reddit post on the topic garnered dozens of comments from players experiencing the same issue. One fellow rogue said: “Yes, this happens to me all the time, and it's really frustrating because the default rogue ultimate is very close range and my build is based on long-range combat. I wasted a lot of thought on the ultimate. I just threw a pair of magic discs and hit no one. “I’m not going to drop any fireworks.”
Commenter Dation correctly theorizes in the thread that refunding skill points is the cause of the bug, saying “Yes, it happens if you refund a Rook or companion's skill points. The companion part is probably why it seems random to people . Because they're on different screens, so you won't see Luke's skills later.” Refunding a companion's skill points doesn't cause a bug, but refunding one of Rook's skill points will constantly convert his ultimate back to his base ability.
The first patch for Dragon Age: The Veilguard fixes a few minor bugs, including the Inquisitor's visuals not displaying correctly, and also adds some cool gear for Mass Effect fans to celebrate N7 Day this year. Perhaps BioWare will fix this minor bug in the next patch.
Dragon Age: The Veilguard is the long-awaited fourth game in BioWare's fantasy RPG series, previously known as Dragon Age: Dreadwolf. A direct sequel to Inquisition, the game focuses on the aforementioned direwolves Red Lyrium and Solas.
