Gameplay of Ode to Castlevania
- Every character from Ode to Castlevania has the ability to find special pickups at any stage. You're initially limited to the Wall Chicken (the Floor Chicken's big brother, of course), but as you progress through the Ode to Castlevania stages, three more types of pickups are unlocked.
- Every character has at least one unlockable weapon selector that can be selected in character selection by clicking/pressing the button on the character icon at the bottom of the screen. All weapon selectors must be unlocked. To do so, you must first unlock all weapons in that specific weapon selector.
- There are a ton of bosses in the Ode to Castlevania stages, but most of them require you to actively seek out them rather than waiting for the right moment for them to appear. New icons appear on the map to help you navigate the stages.
- Evolutions are simple and work the same as the base game. Find the right passive to pair with your active weapon (in some cases, the passive may need to be at max level).
Music from Ode to Castlevania
There are 36 new covers and over 50 original Castlevania music tracks to choose from. All of the covers can be seen in the VS playlist on YouTube. (…excluding the two tracks that will be released on November 7th for some reason…)
As fans of Castlevania and its music, we expected people to be excited to see the cover, but we actually couldn't have anticipated all the hype!
We originally planned to do 24 covers, but we asked all the musicians to do more if they had spare time. Thus, a total of 36 cover songs were born!
As with the rest of the content in the DLC pack, we tried to strike a balance between homages, reinterpretations, experiments, and general remixes.
The only real rule I have for selecting tracks is “tracks that already have an official version that fits VS. You can include that too” (this is a purely arbitrary and stylistic choice, Luca, sorry!) so I I know we ended up leaving out some amazing tracks that were remixed in a new style. Looking back, what we could have done… was start earlier so we would have time to get more done!
I couldn't swap my current track for another.
I can't make any promises right now, but I'd like to cover and add more tracks if I get the chance in the future.
In the meantime, we hope everyone can find a new favorite among the many more niche tracks selected for this collaboration! Thank you so much to Daniele Zandara, Filippo Vicarelly, Evelyn Lark and KEYGEN CHURCH for this amazing soundtrack!
More FAQs
The content of the DLC is mostly simple, but since it is a collaboration, there are some differences. For example, there are no Steam achievements and music covers are not available on paid soundtracks on Steam (but I will post them on YT as usual). Patch 1.12 Quality of Life
- Advanced Music Selection There are so many tracks in the game that the small menus had a hard time working any more, especially if you had some of the DLC packs. And that's coming from someone who remembers the order of the music tracks… That's why we added an advanced menu that allows you to easily navigate through the different albums and music tracks you can choose from.
- After purchasing the MEGA SEAL Seal power-up, you will also unlock the Mega Seal panel in the Collection menu. This panel allows you to easily seal content from entire DLC or the entire base game. Who needs weapons anyway?
- Pause Menu Map Zoom You can now zoom in and out on the pause menu map. No. 2024!
- Pause Menu Arcana Information You can now be notified of what the selected Arcana is doing. Affected weapons are also highlighted. Another big step for humanity.
- New passive weapons in preview mode To complete Ode to Castlevania's evo, I needed two future passive weapons that can be used starting today! So a patch to properly unlock them will arrive sometime next year, but for now you can access these two new passives, Parm Aegis and Karoma's Mana, through Arma Dio's selection menu.
- Memory Usage Improvements Several optimizations have been made to reduce memory usage, which will help late-game games run better on consoles and mobile.
Other platforms
Releasing on all platforms simultaneously required some compromises in the patch version. This simply means that versions of the game may differ slightly across platforms, but we're working to achieve parity between versions as quickly as possible.
Special note about the Nintendo Switch version: It's already scheduled to receive a patch in about two weeks to fix some late-game issues.
The expanded file size is about 260 MB, which is much larger than average (the sum of all music tracks adds up quickly). So, if you are using mobile, we recommend downloading over Wi-Fi.
What's next?
Due to the size of this update, it will take a little longer than usual to release the next patch, but as always, it will come with free content. We will try to make it bigger with fewer updates. This will reduce the stress associated with achievement and give you a little more to experiment with. What exactly is the next content update? Explore the updated Chaos roadmap to find the answers.
We hope to see you all in our annual recap posts, which will also cover general topics like cross-save, online, and experiments (all of which are in progress but not yet ready for full release).
(Just kidding. The next Steam News post will be about hotfixes for this huge expansion.)
Thank you to everyone for your support and we hope you enjoy the surreal Vampire Survivors: Ode to Castlevania!
