valve is still actively involved in Steam Deck 2 development, according to senior company officials. In the short term, the hardware the company releases in 2026 is expected to directly impact the next generation of handhelds, but it appears Valve is still waiting for a meaningful technological leap forward before releasing a Steam Deck successor.
Valve launched the Steam Deck in late February 2022, but supply didn't catch up with demand until the holiday season, when the company discontinued its reservation system and began selling the devices directly. Although Valve has released new Steam Deck models since launch, the handheld gaming machines available today remain fundamentally based on the original design, with some variations in terms of screen and storage technology. Valve CEO Gabe Newell said a second-generation device was already on the company's mind before the first Steam Deck was released in early 2022. However, since then, Valve has provided few updates for the next portable device.
Steam introduces big changes to how game reviews work
Steam has introduced a new feature to its game review process to make it easier to find games that play well on your PC.
Valve is still 'hard' working on Steam Deck 2.
More than four years later, the gaming giant is still “working hard” on Steam Deck 2, according to Valve developer Pierre-Loup Griffais in a recent interview with IGN. The industry veteran said the handheld will be a natural continuation of Valve's gaming hardware, “drawing a straight line from the original Steam Controller and Steam Machine to the Steam Deck,” as well as an easy connection to the new Steam Machine, currently targeted for release in 2026.
Griffais expects Steam Deck 2 to follow that pattern, incorporating everything Valve has learned about consumer-grade hardware so far, but the company isn't ready to discuss a release window just yet. In 2025, he told IGN that Valve would not release a second-generation handheld until it could deliver a significant technological leap, citing examples of 20% to 50% performance gains at the same battery level, which would be insufficient to warrant a sequel. So Valve worked backwards from chip manufacturing advancements and other fundamental improvements to determine what Steam Deck 2 needed to achieve its goals. That research phase has already been completed in 2025, and Griffais said the company has a “very good idea” of what the next Steam Deck will offer. But since the technology needed to realize its vision isn't yet commercially available, Valve is effectively biding its time.
The current situation is further complicated by widespread memory shortages, which recently led Valve to delay Steam Machine's release date and pricing details. Because modern portable gaming PCs need to be much closer to the cutting edge of chip manufacturing than small form factor PCs, the Steam Deck 2 is likely to be much more exposed to component shortages.

The scale of the challenge is also reflected in Valve's apparent difficulty creating the original Steam Deck, which is now four years old. According to a February 2026 report, the supply situation for portable devices has deteriorated globally, with Steam Deck sold out in several key markets, including North America and Europe.
