Just a week after popular Twitch streamer and celebrity Emily Schunk (better known as Emiru) was assaulted by a man during a scheduled meet-and-greet session at this year's TwitchCon, she released a statement saying the live streaming platform failed to protect hers.
A statement released by CEO Dan Clancy included an apology to Emiru before sharing that the company was analyzing every aspect of the process, from registration to event security.
“You have placed a lot of trust in us by attending TwitchCon, and we take our responsibility to take your safety seriously. We know TwitchCon means a lot to many people, and it means a lot to us,” the statement ended in part. “Stay tuned for more updates. Thank you for being a part of Twitch.”
Twitch has previously insisted that safety is its top priority.
Following the attack on Emiru, Clancy sat down with Taylor Lorenz and tried to address the situation head on. What happened instead was a direct conflict with Emiru's situation.
Clancy specifically noted that safety is Twitch's “top priority” and that Twitch's own tools are “the industry leader.” But Emiru was quick to dispute that claim, based on video evidence showing how easily the man was able to bypass the safety measures.
Emiru has already stated that he will not be attending TwitchCon again. That means any changes Twitch makes based on its analytics will help prevent situations like this in the future. At least Emiru got the much-needed and deserved apology he deserved.
