This legendary gaming franchise finally returns in 2027

Everyone loves to see new and original games released. But the gaming industry is built on major franchises. After all, what would games be without games like Mario or The Legend of Zelda? 2027 in particular seems to be a big year for major franchises.

Many of the most popular series are releasing new ones. In some cases, they appear after a long period of time when the series was dormant, adding interest. The biggest new franchises launching in 2027 are:

Like a Dragon Series – Stranger than Heaven

If you're a Like A Dragon fan, you won't have to wait that long for a new entry in the series, as at least one game has been released every year since 2023. However, the Like A Dragon game from 2027 isn't actually called Like A Dragon. The game's name is Stranger Than Heaven, and for a while it wasn't clear if it was part of a series or just another action-adventure game from RGG Studio.

10 Highly Anticipated Games Still Missing in 2026

Here are 10 highly anticipated games still in development that won't release in 2026.

However, it has since been confirmed that it is part of the same universe. However, it's unclear how much connection this game has to the rest of the series. Eventually, a new protagonist appears named Makoto Daito, who is trying to find a new life in Japan.

Tomb Raider Series – Tomb Raider: Legacy Of Atlantis and Tomb Raider: Catalyst

Lara Croft is walking through the jungle looking up, as seen in Tomb Raider Legacy of Atlantis.

The Tomb Raider series is back with a bang in the form of two new action-adventure games. One of them is not. brand new; It is a remake of the original Tomb Raider game titled Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis. When released on February 12, it will be the first release in the Tomb Raider series since the Tomb Raider 4-5 collection in 2025.

The last mainline game that wasn't a remake or remaster was 2018's Shadow of the Tomb Raider. However, another new Tomb Raider title will be released in 2027 called Tomb Raider: Catalyst. So it could be a good year for Tomb Raider fans.

Metro Series – Metro 2039

Nazi soldiers in Metro 2039.

The last main game in the Metro series was 2019's Metro Exodus. The post-apocalyptic FPS series is set to return in February 2027 thanks to Metro 2039. In the series, people live in underground metro tunnels in Moscow due to a nuclear war that occurred many years ago.

This time, there is a man named Hunter who is leading the underground people in questionable ways. But you don't play like him. You control a former exile who returns to the subway. The game promises to bring you another fascinating adventure.

Fable Series – Fable

Fable is a series that has been dormant for a long time. The last Fable game of any kind was 2017's Fable Fortune, which was a free-to-play collectible card game. To find a true Fable title, you have to go all the way back to 2010's Fable 3.

This means it will be a long time before the Fable game of 2027 is released. Like the original, this game is an action RPG set in a fantasy world where you play as a hero of sorts. What kind of hero you will become is up to you.

Final Fantasy Series – Final Fantasy 7 Revelation

Cloud and the rest of the main characters looking at flowers in Final Fantasy VII Revelation.

2027 will finally see the conclusion of the Final Fantasy 7 Remake trilogy that began in 2020. There was the early Final Fantasy 7 Remake, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, and now Final Fantasy 7 Revelation. This revolves around Cloud and the gang trying to finally put an end to Sephiroth's plans.

Like the other two games, Revelation is an RPG featuring real-time combat. It looks like the game will be completely open world, with you flying around in ships and then parachuting down to the ground when necessary.

Pokemon Series – Pokemon Wind and Waves

A Pokemon character standing on the beach of wind and waves.

The Pokemon series feels like it's been around forever at this point. But there's no end in sight, as another major entry in the series is scheduled for release in 2027. The last entry was Pokémon Legends: ZA, which was released in 2025, so the wait for series fans wasn't that long.

Not much has been revealed about the new game yet. However, we do know that it is set in a tropical location and introduces Generation 10 Pokemon. That's enough to get me excited.

Spyro Series – Spyro: Beyond the Realm

Spyro flying over the desert in Spyro A Realm Beyond.

For a while, it felt like Spyro was gone forever. The series was released steadily from 1998 to 2008, after which the purple dragon disappeared for a decade. But he eventually returned in 2018 with the Spyro Reignited Trilogy, a collection of remakes of the original games.

Now he's set to return in 2027 for Spyro: A Realm Beyond. This new game promises to place greater emphasis on the protagonist's flying abilities. He's always been able to jump and glide, but now he can soar. Since it's a 3D platform game, you'll be able to jump as well.

Dragon Ball Xenoverse Series – Dragon Ball Xenoverse 3

Super Saiyan Blue Vegeta with outstretched arms in Dragon Ball Xenoverse 3.

The Dragon Ball franchise has spawned many games, including sub-series such as Dragon Ball Xenoverse. The first Xenoverse game was released in 2015 and the second in 2016. The first two games were released so close together that I might have given up on the third after ten years without one.

However, another Xenoverse game is expected to be released in 2027. The first two games centered around customizable characters preventing villains from messing with the Dragon Ball timeline. Details about this new game are limited so far, but it's expected to be another action RPG where you control a custom character.

Resident Evil Series – Resident Evil: Veronica

These days, you don't have to wait long for a new Resident Evil game. Almost every year a new work is released or a remake is released. 2027 is when we get another remake in the form of Resident Evil Veronica, a new version of 2000's Code: Veronica.

Claire Redfield returns to the title role as she searches for her brother Chris, months after the events of Resident Evil 2. Considering how Capcom handled the RE remake, it's likely that this new game will be quite different from the original.

Xenoblade Chronicles Series – Xenoblade Genesis

A character holding a weapon in Xenoblade Genesis.

2026 is a big year for Xenoblade Chronicles fans, as every major installment in the series is coming to Nintendo Switch 2. 2027 will be even better because a brand new Xenoblade game will be released called Xenoblade Genesis.

Not much has been revealed about the title yet, but it looks like your character will be attending school to learn and improve his special abilities. Of course, this isn't just any school simulator. There will also be more happening in the story.
