Many who are the main antagonists tend to have a squad of grunts in addition to their top members, while other teams tend to be fairly small in terms of ensembles. This list will take a look at some of the smallest crews overall. one piece series, and how they came to be that way.

6 straw hat pirates

Number of pirates: ~10

Straw Hat Pirates One Piece

  • ship: Monkey D. Luffy (Captain), Roronoa Zoro, Usopp, Sanji, Nami, Chopper, Nico Robin, Franky, Brook, Jimbei
  • major ships: Thousand Sunny, Going Merry (old)

The series' main crew is fairly small compared to most pirate crews we've seen. When he started out as a pirate, Luffy only wanted a crew of about 10 people. He currently has about 9 members, with Nami's friend Zeus considered an extension of himself rather than a full-fledged member. It's yet to be seen who his final companion will be, or whether his self-imposed sum will actually be the final number of the Straw Hat Pirates.

Luffy sends out invitations to anyone he deems interesting enough to join his crew, but each official crew member actually has an assigned mission they perform upon joining the crew. Jimbei, the most recent official member, serves as the helmsman, using his powers and skills to steer the ship. Beyond the practical applications, it is acknowledged that each Straw Hat is a notable pirate in its own right, as stated by Marine Admiral Kizaru, who called the entire crew monsters.

The crew bolstered their numbers with the Straw Hat Grand Fleet, who swore an oath to Luffy in gratitude for the crew. That said, they are not an official crew member and are not acknowledged by Luffy as subordinates, instead treating the group like allies.

5 Fake Straw Hat Pirates / Fake Little Pirates

Pirates Number: 8-4

fake straw hat one piece anime

  • debut: Episode 598 (cartoon), Episode 517 (animation)
  • ship: Demallo Black (Captain, fake Luffy), Manjaro (fake Zoro), Mon Bluetain (fake Sogeking/Usopp), Drip (fake Sanji), Chocolat (fake Nami), Nora Kitsune (fake Chopper), Cocoa (Fake Robin), Turco (Fake Frankie)
  • major ships: unknown

This group of con artists was formed to capitalize on the fame of the original. They tend not to resemble their counterparts, but they share enough surface similarities that this plan can have some success for a while. Despite being a crew member at the time of her debut, Brooke was noticeably absent from the ensemble. This is likely because his membership was recent and not widely known to the public at the time of its formation. The fake Straw Hat voices are all voiced by real Straw Hat performers, but are reassigned to other crew members. For example, their captain Demalo Black was voiced by Sanji's actors. To spice up the game, some fake straw hats will boast about their bounties and connections. This is something real members do not typically do.

Unlike Luffy, Black cares little about his subordinates other than using them to achieve his goals. He attempted to train more of his crew, gathering powerful pirates with high bounties to act as his subordinates in a manner not too different from Buggy. This crew included reindeer pirates who wanted to kill them from the inside. However, this fraud was quickly revealed around the time the real Straw Hats returned to piracy. Most of the crew were thought to have been buried alive by the reindeer, but this does not seem to have been fatal, as some of them were later imprisoned alive.

At least four crew members continued this type of conflict while trapped at Marine Base G-4. Black, along with Manjaro, Drip, and Turco, pretended to be the Kid Pirates, who were thought to have recently gone missing at sea.

4 New giant warrior pirates

Number of pirates: 5

One Piece - Five new giant warrior pirates appear in the cover art of the digitally colored comic

  • debut: Episode 706 (cartoon), Episode 639 (animation)
  • ship: Hayrudin (Captain), Stansen, Rod, Goldberg, Gert
  • major ships: Naglfar

This crew consisted of five former mercenaries from Elbaf. They worked at Buggy's Delivery and were generally recognized as top earners. However, after being rescued by the Straw Hat Pirates of Dressrosa, their leader, Hairudin, left the organization and founded a pirate group along the same lines as the Giant Warrior Pirates. Hazruddin became one of the seven captains of the Straw Hat Grand Fleet, an organization of subordinates devoted to Luffy.

Just like the Straw Hat Pirates, these pirates each have their own role to play in the crew. Stansen is a shipwright, Goldberg is a chef, Road is a navigator, and Gerd is a doctor.

3 ideo pirate

Number of pirates: 4

Abdullah, Gite (mostly covered except for turban and face), Ideo, Blue Gilly (head cut off), and the four Ideo pirates.

  • debut: Episode 799 (comic), Episode 744 (animation)
  • ship: Ideo (Captain), Blue Gilly, Abdullah, Jeet
  • major ships: Unnamed (formerly owned by Orlumbus)

The Ideo Pirates were one of two sailors formed as part of the Straw Hat Grand Fleet, an alliance of pirates who swore to serve the Straw Hats in gratitude for their actions in Dressrosa. Some members had been active as pirates before the crew was formed, but others decided to become pirates for this purpose instead. Unlike other sailors formed to serve the fleet, such as the Happo Navy and the Yonta Maria Grand Fleet, the Ideo Pirates have never had a prior incarnation.

Four of these sailors took part in the Corrida Coliseum and later took part in the fight against the Don Quixote pirates. In particular, all four were cursed by Sugar, who turned them into toys that served as Doflamingo's slaves and effectively erased them from everyone's memories, including each other. Even after being released, they remained loyal to the Straw Hats and fought against those claiming the bounty.

The crew's captain, Ideo, is an outstanding long-armed martial artist who has won the New World Central Fighting Tournament twice. Blue Gilly is a practitioner of the Jao Kun Do style belonging to the Zhuang tribe. The remaining two crew members, Abdullah and Jeet, are a pair of former bounty hunters who tend to fight together. They gained notoriety by bombing government buildings at some point in the past. In keeping with the production team's martial arts theme, both were named after famous Canadian professional wrestlers.

Their ship was gifted to them by Orlumbus, who previously controlled the fleet directly and had the largest number of ships and crews of any captain in the Straw Hat Grand Fleet. It is unclear if the Ideo Pirates are seeking expansion, as their goals other than trying to serve Luffy have not been confirmed.

2 macro pirate

Number of pirates: 3

One Piece's three-member pirate crew: Gyaro, Macro, and Tansui.

  • page Episode 197 (cover story), Episode 386 (animation)
  • ship: Macro (Captain), Gyaro, Tansui
  • major ships: No Name (Destroyed by Hatchan)

The Macro Pirates are one of two crews that split from the Sun Pirates after their new captain, Jimbei, became a warlord. Due to this origin, they are a pirate group comprised entirely of fishmen. Macro is a pelican eel fishman, Gyaro is a goldfish fishman with protruding eyes, and Tansui is an arowana fishman. Each member is further distinguished in that they resemble freshwater fish.

As a member of the Sun Pirates, Macro was one of their more ruthless members, adept at killing humans. Despite this, he loved Koala, a former human slave whom the crew, along with Gyaro and Tansui, delivered to their families. Unfortunately, this act divided the crew as Captain Fisher Tiger was killed and Arlong was taken prisoner after Koala's family contacted the Marines and captured them in exchange for overlooking Koala's enslavement.

It is unclear how much this perception of betrayal shaped the philosophy of the Macro Pirates, but despite their history as members of the Sun Pirates, a crew led by former slaves, they seemed to have little problem enslaving others. In particular, they attempted to capture Cammy, a kissing gourami mermaid, 31 times due to her high value as a slave. The Macro Pirates also attempted to capture their former friend Hatchan at least once for similar reasons.

The crew doesn't seem particularly competent, failing to capture anyone on screen. They were previously linked to the Flying Fish Riders, but that will no longer be the case as their leader Duval has changed his mind. The small size of the crews may have been due, at least in part, to the general unpopularity of slavery among fishermen.

1 foxy pirate

Number of pirates: 3

One Piece - Foxy Pirate

  • debut: Episode 304 (cartoon), Episode 207 (animation)
  • ship: Foxy (Captain), Porsche, Hamburg
  • major ships: Sexy Foxy (old)

The Foxy Pirates were once a large pirate group boasting hundreds of members. They tended to scale up through Davy Back Fights, a pirate tradition in which sailors fought, with the loser often having to give up a crew member to the winner. They once encountered the Straw Hats, insulted them, and attempted to steal their desired comrade, but failed. Despite a lot of cheating in Davy Back Fights, the members seem genuinely good at the events they decide to participate in. Their captain is Foxy, whose Devil Fruit allows him to temporarily slow down anything caught in the rays he can emit.

But even in their most capable form, they are put to shame by the much more powerful pirate crews of the New World, especially the Straw Hats. After the initial failure, the crew tends to mostly joke around and mostly serve as fixtures for non-canon events in the anime. The Final Saga confirms that the Foxy Pirates have hit rock bottom. This is because only Foxy, Porche and Hamburg can be found in smaller boats and not the previously established base vessel Sex Foxy. Although not explicitly stated, it is likely that the ship, along with most of her crew, were lost at one time or another in Davy Back fights with other crews from the New World.
