Earlier this year, Nintendo announced Pokopia, a Minecraft-style spinoff starring Ditto in human form, which baffled, confused, and delighted Pokémon fans everywhere. Yes, it was very strange, but it seemed to strike a chord with fans of the series, and it became the most-watched trailer in the announced Nintendo Direct. Personally, I think it's the kind of wacky spinoff that the Pokemon series needs more of.
However, while Pokopia's official announcement trailer looked sleek and modern, the prototype build developed by Game Freak (most likely just a promotional piece for the powerful faction) looks significantly different from the Pokopia that Nintendo gave us last month.
The Pokopia prototype build appears to have been leaked and is fully playable.
Game Freak's personal ventures have been shared regularly by Twitter user CentroLeaks for quite some time, and the latest drop claims to have discovered a fully finished prototype of Pokopia, built with the Unity engine. As seen in Pokopia's official reveal trailer, it's immediately apparent from the video that the art style is completely different, going for a more pixelated aesthetic and using small Pokemon sprites instead of full 3D models.
In the game, we see Pokémon essentially being used as resource gatherers. Venasaur is used to harvest crops, and Charizard and Pyukumuku are also placed in the world. You can also see three Pokémon building structures, sleeping, and eating cake. I think it will be a very cute mobile game. If you really want to try it yourself, Centro Leaks claims to have the full Unity source code that you can use to import the game into Unity.
Of course, to avoid the wrath of real Nintendo ninjas, I won't share that with you here, so you'll have to dig a little deeper. At the very least, this is an interesting insight into Game Freak's development process, and if Pokopia is a huge hit when it releases next year, you can look back at this video to see the game's humble beginnings. Even though Pokopia is terrible, we can still look back and think about the games that could have been.
