Fire Lords from hundreds or even thousands of years ago like Zoryu might not have considered this, but when Fire Lord Sozin took power after his father Taiso, everything went wrong. It was the leadership of the Fire Nation that brought about the disaster, not the country's common people or culture.
The Fire Nation's unique culture is a remarkable one, shaped by sheer force of will, a refined taste for theatrics, and an emphasis on respect and custom. This island nation is also home to one of the world's first examples of industrialization. Fire Lord Ozai's royal banner depicts him standing amidst the gears and exhaust pipes of progress. However, Ozai and his fellow Fire Lords and would-be Fire Lords nearly destroyed the Fire Nation. Even after heroes like Aang and Zuko took control of the situation, scars remained that slowly faded over time. In some ways, the damage was done, and the glory days of the Fire Nation were over, at least in people's minds.
The Fire Lords value ambition and cunning more than mercy.
Zuko's family suffered greatly from the royal rule.
One of the effects of the Fire Nation's questionable leadership was royal suffering. Many of Zuko's own flashback sequences have made it clear that, even by the standards of most fictional royal families, he was born from a nest of vipers. Becoming a prince was never easy. Expectations were high, but Zuko fared poorly compared to other princes. When Zuko was born, the Fire Lords and their kin prized ambition and cunning above all else, and cruelty seemed almost the rule. Fire Lord Sozin appears to have started this trend, and his long-reigning son Azulon perpetuates it. Azulon, in turn, passed this on to his twisted son Ozai, who in turn passed it on to his daughter Azula.
The effects of such monstrous leadership have not often been seen in America. Avatar: The Last AirbenderThat's because the comics had limited time to depict the full effects of the Hundred Years' War, and the story was mostly about Avatar Aang himself. Despite this, the Fire Lords were reborn as harsh authoritarians who pushed their people to their limits, and this affected the daily life of the Fire Nation. For example, at the school Aang attended, dancing was banned and disobedient students were sent to the coal mines.
Does Avatar Korra deserve the hate even after more than a decade?
Korra has received a lot of hate within the Avatar fandom over the years. Should those feelings still exist 10 years later?
That and the Fire Nation's military methods undoubtedly strained the nation's resources and manpower, and the Fire Nation continued a century-long conflict in distant lands. Despite the victories of Fire Nation forces in places like Omashu and Ba Sing Se and the eradication of the Air Nomads, fighting against the entire world for so long would have been exhausting.
Worst of all, Fire Nation leadership tended to have overlapping negative effects on the royal family and the nation itself, and Azula's growth led her to abuse and terrorize her own subordinates. As crown princess, Azula projected all of Ozai's harshness towards his people, amplified by her own ingenuity and drive for success. Eventually, things got so bad that Azula fired all her employees, Imperial Firebenders, and even Agent Dai Li, much to Lo and Li's concern.
By the time Sozin's Comet arrived, Azula was falling apart and in no condition to become Fire Lord, but she was set for her coronation anyway, a startling sign of how far the royal family had fallen. Only Zuko's intervention and the fierce firebending of the Agni Kai prevented the Fire Nation from falling to Azula's unprepared hands.

The Fire Nation's past crimes haunt its present.
Firebenders are also convenient villains for Amon.
Fire Lords Sozin, Azulon, and Ozai have also long caused damage to the Fire Nation in less visible ways, ultimately becoming a problem for Zuko and Aang to solve. In addition to the enormous physical harm inflicted on the world by the leaders of the Fire Nation, these three Fire Lords have earned the world's hatred for what was once the most prosperous and perhaps most revered realm in the world. During the Eclipse Invasion, Zuko made this very clear as he confronted his father and explained his country's many transgressions. One of Zuko's best quotes avatar After seeing how the Fire Nation's actions have fueled the world's hatred for this nation, Zuko even says that the Fire Nation deserves it.
Ozai didn't want to hear that, but Zuko was right. The Fire Nation has been the enemy of humanity through invasions for over 100 years, and was certainly the biggest enemy of the Avatar Cycle at the time. When the war ended, Dark Horse was left with a broken heart. Avatar: The Last Airbender cartoon and The Legend of Korra. Firebenders were often seen as the “bad guys”, dangerous people who could not be trusted or befriended. The term “remanufacturer” was still used several months after the war ended.
'Avatar: The Last Airbender' sequel is great, but a sequel might be better
There is a desperate need for an 'Avatar: The Last Airbender' prequel that explores the pre-bending world and the lives of previous avatars.
Perhaps most damning is the fact that even during the Avatar Korra era, decades after flashback sequences moved ahead in the timeline, firebenders were often feared or still viewed as villains. The professional bending athletes got along well with their firebender teammates, but the average person in Republic City felt differently. The masked Bloodbender Amon used this fact to falsely accuse the non-existent Firebender of losing his family and suffering burn scars on his face. Zuko's daughter, Fire Lord Izumi, was extremely reluctant to go on the offensive to save the world against Kuvira's Earth Empire. Izumi felt bitter and ashamed of the many evils committed by his country, as Fire Lords like Sozin and Ozai decided that war was better than peace and true prosperity.
