Starfield won't remain Xbox exclusive, Phil Spencer hints.

summation

  • In an interview, Phil Spencer was asked if Starfield was a guaranteed Xbox console exclusive.

  • Spencer says that's not the case, and that the game being ported to other consoles isn't ruled out.

  • This comes after numerous rumors that Bethesda games would be coming to PS5.

Early last year, there were rumors that Xbox would be porting Starfield to the PlayStation 5. It attracted so much attention that many people were waiting for the announcement. However, one of the leakers backtracked on this, saying that they were wrong and that the game was not “scheduled” for PS5.

Now, almost exactly a year later, it looks like Starfield may finally be coming to PS5. In an interview with journalist Destin Legarie, Xbox boss Phil Spencer was asked if Starfield would “stay the same” for the time being. His answer was a resounding “no.” He emphasized that no games have been excluded from the multi-platform release.

Starfield is not guaranteed to be exclusive to Xbox consoles.

Phil Spencer reaffirmed that no game is being left out of Xbox's multiplatform strategy.

“There’s no reason for me to put a fence on any game and say this game isn’t going anywhere. [where] Spencer says: “Our strategy is to enable us to release games. Game Pass is a critical component for playing games on our platforms, but not for us to block them on other platforms.”

Legarie then asks Spencer about the fans' concerns. That's because many people weren't optimistic about Xbox's shift to focus on Game Pass instead of securing console exclusives. In response, Spencer admits that Xbox's identity will “evolve” but insists that “it's always been that way.”

Starfield coming to PS5 will certainly be a huge milestone in Xbox's new strategy. It was one of the most widely anticipated games to be pulled from PS5 and Switch ahead of the game's 2023 release date, and was also removed from Game Pass from day one. But that doesn't seem to be enough to beat PlayStation at its own game, as Xbox is now focused on selling Game Pass subscriptions and making games available elsewhere.
