PlayStation recently started sending emails and messages to PS4 users urging them to upgrade to PS5 before the release of Grand Theft Auto 6, and many are taking this as a marketing signal.
As of this week, it's been over a year since we last saw Grand Theft Auto 6. Everyone is thinking that time is running out for Rockstar to announce some big news about the game. While the endless theories about Trailer 3 sometimes generate a lot of interest, with all of the Take-Two CEO's comments and interviews about GTA 6, it seems more likely that something will come out soon.
For some time we've been promising that marketing for GTA 6 would begin this summer. It's still a good month and there's still a bit left, but it feels like Rockstar is preparing to announce something soon. A great example emerged today where PlayStation contacted random PS4 users and asked them to prepare a game for release.
If you don't have a PS5, you'll now be prompted to upgrade to GTA 6 on PlayStation.
The “best GTA 5 player” is also taking a stab at making the Switch
As pointed out by Twitter user GTAVI_Countdown, PS4 players have reported receiving messages directly from PlayStation. The message read: “Buy a PlayStation 5 today so you can be ready when Grand Theft Auto 6 launches.” One variation of this message says it's because the player added GTA 6 to their wishlist, while another variation says it's because the user is the “best Grand Theft Auto 5 player.”
If anything, this is probably the biggest sign we've seen so far that GTA 6's November release date is almost confirmed. PlayStation has left the game out of its 2026 roundup in the past, but now seems much more confident about when the game will release, as it's actively telling players to get ready.
Considering everything else that's happened about GTA 6 over the past few weeks, some may take PlayStation's email as a sign that news about the game is fast approaching. I'd caution anyone jumping on that hype train to check their expectations, but this is most likely what it's been like in a long time.
