Persona 4 is one of the most controversial games in the series, and there are many reasons for this. It's very much a product of its time, with a few homophobic and sexist jokes and a bit of body shaming for good measure. Unfortunately, behind most of these jokes is one character in particular: Yosuke Hanamura.
Anyone who has played Persona 4 will know exactly what I'm talking about. Yosuke almost constantly makes inappropriate comments about women, teases Kanji about possibly being gay due to his hobbies, and routinely shames a certain fat student. You may dismiss it as youthful ignorance, but it certainly makes him a less likeable fellow.
Persona 4 Revival Is Changing Yosuke To Make Him Less “Insensitive”
He was almost certain to be toned down to some degree in the Persona 4 revival, but now Persona team executive producer Kazuhisa Wada has confirmed in an interview with Anime Corner at Anime Expo 2026 that Atlus has changed the character to “better suit the world we live in now.”
“He is sometimes a little insensitive in the way he treats outsiders,” says Wada. “So we wanted to lighten it up and make it more relevant to the world we live in now.”
Personally, I think it would be a bit of a mistake to completely eradicate all of Yosuke's problematic traits. It's unknown to what extent Yosuke will change, but Persona 4 is a game about coming to terms with your own insecurities, and Yosuke's prejudice against outsiders would certainly be a character flaw that could be addressed in the story.
Without it, Yosuke is a little less interesting as a character and essentially closer to Ryuji 2.0. Ideally, Atlus would have kept Yosuke's homophobic tendencies and made him a gay romance option as originally planned in Persona 4. But unfortunately, I don't think Atlus is capable of doing that these days.
