The 'Ki' part in these two words simply represents energy. Haki is a spiritual energy, while Maki is a demonic energy. This puts them on opposite sides of the energy system of the One Piece world.

In chapter 1181 of the manga, Eiichiro Oda officially stated that Maki's power actually exists within everyone. Once again, this is very similar to Haki, but at the opposite end. Imu confirms that Omen is his military power, a power derived from jealousy that he uses to achieve his goals.
