Everywhere you look on the internet, you can still find people who are angry and angry about PlayStation's move away from physical media. Wolverine's latest trailer was dominated by angry comments demanding the return of the disc, and every Twitter post from PlayStation has also been relatively comfortably categorized by angry fans.
Even some industry celebrities, such as former Sony CEO Shawn Layden, have spoken out against the move. Not everyone agrees with the decision, and now we can add Nier Automata director Yoko Taro to the growing pile.
Even Nier Automata's Director Is Sad About PlayStation Killing Fortnite
Over the weekend, Taro tweeted about how he received a physical copy of Hi-Fi Rush. He said people shouldn't “assume their parents and physical media will always be there” and should get physical media as soon as possible if they want it.
Taro then went into more depth about his personal feelings about PlayStation getting rid of the disc, saying that he thought it was “sad” that they were going away and that he thought limited editions with physical copies would have become more commonplace.
Taro said, “Personally, I feel sad that physical media is disappearing, but I think it is the trend of the times.”
“I thought that leading the physical distribution itself would be an advantage over Steam, etc., so even if digital downloads are promoted, there will come a future in which only expensive limited editions will be physically distributed (like CD distribution). I missed the goal, it’s a shame.”
I like the idea of limited physical releases as we move into a fully digital age, but PlayStation has decided to ditch it entirely. It's also sad that if Taro makes another Nier game in the near future (oh my god) it probably won't be on disc. It's a shame, but this is the future PlayStation has created for us.
