Key Takeaways
-
The killer behind Mortal Kombat 1's Ghostface mask has been revealed.
-
This is Billy Loomis, one of the two killers who appeared in the first film in 1996.
-
One of the intro crashes even paraphrases an iconic Billy line.
Ghostface appeared in Mortal Kombat 1 today, and like any good Scream movie, fans are eagerly awaiting the big reveal about who's under the mask.
Thankfully, NetherRealm makes it easy to find. When fighting the Woodsboro Killer, using a crit or critical hit will reveal none other than Billy Loomis (though, as fans have pointed out, he looks more like Johnny in a wig).
relevant
Mortal Kombat 1 seems to have brought back Kobra and Kira from Deception as Ghostface.
Two of the three Ghostfaces have already been identified.
Loomis was originally one of the two killers. The boyfriend of Sidney Prescott (or Stu, to be honest), he masterminded the first Ghostface murders. It's only fitting, then, that he becomes the man beneath the mask in this new crossover.
There are also many references to Little Scream.
NetherRealm clearly has a lot of respect for Scream, and the intro battle is a great showcase of this. Not only are there references to the film in the dialogue, but Ghostface uses the same modulator as Billy (and the other killers in the series) to get the iconic, unnerving voice of Roger Jackson.
Speaking of introductory dialogue, if two Ghostfaces clash (which isn't unprecedented in Scream 6), they might ask for each other's favorite scary movie. And of course, Ghostface refers to the fictional Stab, who retells the Woodsboro murders in space.
Of course, Omni-Man says, “Fuck movies, nothing beats a good book.”
One of the most original callbacks is the death of Johnny Cage while playing Mortal Kombat 1, when he loses control of Ghostface and is killed by another Ghostface sitting on his couch in 'real life'.
This is no doubt a reference to the meta, a movie-within-a-movie-within-a-movie opening of Scream 4 that layers Stab upon Stab upon Stab on top of the actual movie.
Furthering the idea that Billy is behind the mask, Rain takes the opportunity to say that scary movies turned Ghostface into a psychopath. In response, he paraphrases Billy's line from the original film: “Movies don’t make psychopaths, they make psychopaths more creative.”
What's particularly interesting about this callback is that the line is said by Skeet Ulrich in the film, whereas Jackson performed it.
Don't criticize the movie. The movie doesn't make Psycho, it makes Psycho more creative.
There are so many nods to the series that I could go on all day. But before we get into any more of that, there's something we need to do first. I'll be back soon…
Mortal Kombat 1 reboots the world of the popular fighting game after Liu Kang altered the events of Mortal Kombat 11. The game features a wide range of fighters, an expanded story, and the all-new Kameo fighter system.
