Sony has released a huge new update. PS PortalIt refreshes the home screen's UI while adding several new features, including cloud streaming. The PlayStation handheld continues to grow and add new features to better support how players utilize Portal.
Although it's not a standalone handheld gaming device like the Steam Deck or Nintendo Switch 2, Sony's PlayStation Portal is proving to be more than just a PS5 accessory. As PS Portal approaches its second anniversary, Sony has continued to improve and expand the features it offers, with the latest update being one of the biggest and most anticipated to date.
Cloud streaming added to PlayStation Portal update
PS Portal's latest update is a big update for the portable device, as it finally introduces cloud streaming functionality for PlayStation Plus Premium members. Sony says thousands of games already support the feature, with hundreds more compatible across the PlayStation Plus game catalog and classic catalog. Rumors about the much-requested PS Portal feature have been circulating recently, but now that it's officially launched, players can now stream their games while someone else is using their PS5, or take them on the go over high-speed Wi-Fi.
Cloud streaming may be the headline news of this patch, but the update also applies to PS Portal, adding other new features and UI improvements. Notably, the update also introduces a redesigned home screen with three new tabs for Remote Play, Cloud Streaming, and Search, which allows players to browse their library of games, including available PlayStation Plus streamable games.
Sony has also added support for 3D audio to games supported during remote play and cloud streaming via wired headphones or PlayStation Link wireless audio. Players can also add a password lock in Settings to better protect their PS Portal. Lastly, there is a network status screen to help players check the quality of their connection.
Lastly, the PS Portal update also added new cloud streaming-related features, including an in-game store that allows players to make purchases without leaving their game session. There are new accessibility options like screen readers and adjustable text size. Finally, players can also send invites and join multiplayer sessions directly from the quick menu.

Although not a successor to the PSP, PlayStation Portal solves the age-old problem of having to share one TV in a household. This remote play device allows users to stream everything that happens on PlayStation 5 directly to the large 8-inch 1080p LCD screen. What makes PlayStation Portal unique is that it includes all the advanced technologies of the DualSense wireless controller, such as adaptive triggers and haptic feedback. One downside is that it lacks Bluetooth support for wireless audio, but it does work with PlayStation Pulse earbuds and headsets, and it also supports a 3.5mm audio jack for wired audio.
