But what he cannot do is break their immortality, which means he is defeated by them in a long battle. Even if Luffy is able to overwhelm them with strength, he can eventually continue to regenerate and not lose health. On the other hand, Luffy eventually loses Gear 5, which is his biggest weakness and ultimately leads to his downfall. This means that characters like Elders are declared victors.
