At this point it becomes clear that Amiibo have become quite expensive over the years. The addition of bigger, better, and more detailed figures, along with Nintendo's usual price increases, made Super Smash Bros. a breeze in the Wii U and Nintendo 3DS era. The cost-effective figures that fans used to collect en masse no longer exist.
Perhaps the biggest example of this change in strategy is the Kirby Air Riders exclusive Amiibo line that will be released next month. It was previously revealed in the Nintendo Direct dedicated to the GameCube sequel that Kirby and Waddle-Dee would be getting Amiibo, which were later revealed to cost $49.99 each, making them the most expensive Amiibo on record.
Fast forward to today, and another Nintendo Direct dedicated to Air Riders was added, with three more Amiibo announced – Meta Knight, King Dedede, and Chef Kawaski – bringing the total Amiibo count to five.
Currently, only Meta Knight is available for pre-order, and like the other two Amiibo, it costs $49.99. I doubt King Dedede or Chew Kawaski would be cheaper. That means if you want all five Air Riders Amiibo, you'll have to shell out $250 ($49.99 x 5).
For reference, you can buy the Switch Lite for $199.99 and spend an extra $50 on new games, or you can invest $250 in the Switch 2 and get the remaining $200. Either way, that's a pretty radical price increase.
Considering the performance of previous expensive Amiibo, it might be better to wait.
Now, we can't tell you what to do with your money, but if these Amiibo are on your wish list, patience may actually be the best thing for your wallet.
That's because the last of the “most expensive” Amiibo, also known as Street Fighter exclusives, ended up in clearance boxes, making the price even more palatable. Other Amiibo exclusive to Metroid Dread or Zelda titles were similarly heavily discounted after no buyers.
This means that the price of Meta Knight is likely to become cheaper in the coming months. At least that's what I'm telling myself to avoid hitting the pre-order button.
