When asked how playstation Three key figures at Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) say the PlayStation 6 experience should go beyond the living room. PlayStation has listed some key points about how it plans to allow users to enjoy their games away from the couch.
This news comes at a time of controversy for the PlayStation brand. In early July, Sony announced that games released starting in January 2028 would no longer receive physical disc prints. The move caused a storm on social media, with several users and companies criticizing PlayStation amid its push for digital exclusivity. PlayStation has since said it will support physical reprints for games released before January 2028, but that hasn't stopped users and other companies from continuing to pressure Sony to reconsider its stance.

PlayStation wants to move its brand beyond the living room.
Days before Sony announced its plans to go fully digital, the company revealed plans to bring back players who primarily play on PC. SIE President and CEO Hideaki Nishino, Studio Business CEO Hermen Hulst, and Senior Vice President of Finance and Corporate Development Lynn Azar were asked in a translated Q&A held in June how the company could bring back users who migrated to PC during the COVID-19 pandemic to PlayStation. It's unclear which person answered the question, but Sony acknowledged that the PlayStation brand is heavily associated with the idea of playing video games in the living room. Sony has said that the PS6 will aim to convey the unique values of the PlayStation brand rather than being a “PC alternative.” SIE has said it will use technological advancements and expanding usage styles, but it is unclear what this means.

However, Sony also revealed that some console gamers have discovered how to utilize gaming monitors instead as a way to play their favorite titles. In response to this trend, SIE says it has started selling gaming monitors and speakers, breaking away from the “PlayStation is like a living room” notion that has served the company well since the 1990s. One such peripheral is the upcoming PS5 gaming monitor, a 27-inch display with a DualSense charging hook that can be used to easily charge the DualSense and DualSense Edge controllers. The PS5 gaming monitor is scheduled to release on August 27th, but is currently available for pre-order through PlayStation Direct for $349.
Sony has been reluctant to reveal too many details about its PS6 console, despite discussing its plans for the future. However, Sony's move toward releasing digital-only games may have unintentionally revealed that the PS6 likely won't have a disc drive. Given Sony's deadline for new physical game releases is January 2028, it's also unlikely that the next-generation PlayStation console will be released before then.
