How To Unlock Every Ending In Fears To Fathom: Scratch Creek

Scratch Creek is the latest episode in the ongoing episodic series, Fears To Fathom, with a little bit of a twist. The twist is that this entry is technically episode one of a new spin-off series called Fears To Fathom Together. While all the previous episodes were entirely solo-player experiences, Scratch Creek is designed as an online co-op experience for two players to enjoy together.

If you don’t have anyone to play with, you can use the game’s matchmaking system or find someone through the Discord server, but you won’t be able to play it alone due to how much of the game is designed around the co-op element. With all that said, if you and your partner need any help figuring out what to do next or how to unlock the ending you want, here’s how to fully complete Scratch Creek.

Since this is a co-op game, anything in this article that is specific to Marcus players will be green, and anything specific to Tessa players will be purple.

Should You Play As Marcus Reed Or Tessa Langley

Marcus and Tessa in Fears To Fathom Scratch Creek.

As mentioned, this is a co-op experience. So, either way, one of you will need to play as Marcus and the other as Tessa. Each character will have their own responsibilities, and, in a way, you’ll almost be playing two different versions of the same game.

After clicking Connect in the main menu, one player must invite the other. If you have nobody to play with, you can select ‘Find Survivor’ to search for another solo player to play with. Once both players are ready, start a new game.

While most of the main story beats will be experienced together, and you can trade off tasks like driving if you choose to, the second half of the game will have several individual tasks for you both to complete that are tied to your specific character.

Overall, if you’re more skittish, then I’d recommend playing as Tessa. You will have close calls, just like Marcus, but Marcus’ individual tasks are a lot riskier and scarier for players who don’t like doing things alone.

Speaking of being alone, you will have proximity voice chat during the game, so you should ensure that your voice chat settings are working before you begin. When you’re not in proximity, the game also has an in-game texting feature for communicating.

To experience the game as it is intended, Scratch Creek heavily advises that you don’t use external communications with your partner, such as Discord.

Packing Up

The story of Scratch Creek begins on April 30. As you may know, all Fears To Fathom games are allegedly based on real stories, and this one is no different. To set up the game, you’ll be told that Marcus and Tessa wrote in because they noticed that another Fears To Fathom episode was eerily similar to something they experienced too.

Both characters’ written introductions are unique, but you’ll only be able to see yours. So, you will be instructed to wait while the other player reads their introduction from their character’s perspective if you finish before them. Once both players are done, you’ll be loaded into the game.

Marcus standing on top of the moving trailer in Fears To Fathom Scratch Creek.

This episode will open with both characters preparing for the road trip ahead of moving out of state for Marcus’ new job. Both players will start at the same house, but Tessa will begin in the backyard, and Marcus will be at the front, in the driveway.

Once you reconvene, Marcus and Tessa will bicker over whether to leave today or tomorrow morning. Tessa will insist it’s too late and text her dad to ask if they can wait until tomorrow. At this point, the Tessa player will need to open their phone and text their dad, who will respond that people are expected to show up at the house tomorrow, and you have to be out tonight.

If you’re not the player using your phone to text during a specific interaction, you’ll see an icon above the other player indicating that they are currently using their phone.

To wrap up this portion of the game, all you need to do is work together to pack things into the moving trailer in front of the house. Smaller boxes can be moved solo, but larger items like the couch and the audio equipment in the basement will require both of you to bring them out to the trailer. Ideally, you’ll get those in first, then throw the smaller boxes in after.

A box sitting in the basement of a house in Fears To Fathom Scratch Creek.

There are several items throughout nearly every room in the house to load into the trailer, so make sure you cover all the rooms and get things like the TV and Microwave that aren’t in boxes. There’s a door in the basement that’s locked, and if you try to open it, you’ll be told that they never bothered to open that door while living here, so you don’t need to worry about it.

While moving, a man named Nate will appear at the front of the house and ask why the two of you didn’t leave this morning and if you need any help. Either player can respond to Nate’s dialogue, and none of the options have a real impact on anything, so you can pick any that feels right for you.

Once everything is loaded into the trailer, you’ll need to back the car up to it to hook it up. To do this, one player needs to drive the car into the street and back into the trailer while the other stands next to the trailer and hooks it up once they’re close enough. It doesn’t have to be exact, but it does need to be close, so the player outside the car may need to help guide.

You won’t be able to move unless you put the suitcase in the trunk, as the dialogue prompted. So if it’s in the trailer or still in the garage, you’ll need to move it to the car’s trunk.

Once the trailer is hooked up, you can begin driving down the road. Other cars are present, so you need to be careful not to go flying around corners, because you can absolutely drive entirely over the cars on the road and end up stuck. Trust me. Drive to the end of your road and turn right, and the game will transition to the next scene.

Interstate — 7:40 pm

Marcus driving the car on interstate in Fears To Fathom Scratch Creek.

In the next scene, it is now 7:40 pm, and Marcus and Tessa are on the interstate. The driver will need to continue controlling the steering wheel, while the passenger gives directions using the NavGo app on their phone. The driver will actually need to drive and take the correct exits with the passenger’s directions, so this isn’t just a leisurely cutscene car ride.

If you’re playing as the passenger, now is a good time to get the ‘Holy Cow’ Achievement, which involves getting a score of 100,000,000 in the Cow Clicker game on your phone. Just don’t forget to give directions.

Even if the passenger doesn’t have their phone open, the directions will pop up as a notification on screen when they change, but the driver won’t be able to see them, so the passenger will need to communicate. That said, the GPS does live update as you drive, so it may be worth leaving it open the entire time to avoid missing the exit.

The directions you’ll need to follow for this trip are:

  1. Stay on 255 West
  2. Take Exit 5 North
  3. Stay on 5 North
  4. Heavy Traffic on 5 North (the passenger will need to reroute the GPS)
  5. Take Exit 30 to Cascade Highway
  6. Stay on Cascade Highway Road

While following this last direction, the game will transition into the next scene.

If you continue on the highway without rerouting or miss the reroute exit before the passenger has time to convey the directions, you will receive a prompt indicating you arrived at your destination late due to traffic, but were safe.

This is one of the game’s endings. You will be brought back to the starting screen and need to continue from the Interstate checkpoint to finish the rest of the game.

Backroads — 8:08 pm

Marcus driving on backroads in Fears To Fathom Scratch Creek.

Once you transition into the next scene checkpoint, the passenger should have GPS directions to stay on Old Cascade Highway. Marcus will get a few texts from his dad, but if Marcus is driving, you won’t be able to view them. As you continue along the backroads, you’ll eventually come up to a fallen tree in the middle of the road.

The driver will stop the car, and Marcus will suggest that you both move the tree off the road enough to get by. So both Marcus and Tessa will need to get out and move the tree together. While moving the tree out of the road, someone will begin messing with the trailer. As you begin walking back, you should see them run off into the forest on the left side of the car.

They’ll have tampered with the trailer doors, but you only need to close them and then get back in the car and keep driving. As you continue on your drive, you’ll get new directions to turn right onto Roseburg Road. When you reach the dead end where you need to turn, you’ll notice that the road sign is actually flipped.

A roadsign being lit up by car lights in the dark with a GPS notification at the top of the screen in Fears To Fathom Scratch Creek.

The sign will say Roseburg is on the left, even though the GPS says it’s on the right. This is another possible ending to the game. To progress in the game as intended, you’re supposed to follow the GPS and go right. If you want to see one of the game’s good endings, follow the road sign that says Roseburg is on the left.

Assuming that you followed the GPS and turned right, your GPS will now update and tell you to continue on Roseburg Road. Shortly after, a truck will start riding your tail before aggressively driving around you as you pass a Motel. Keep driving after that happens, and you should eventually be loaded into the next checkpoint.

Repair Shop — 8:52 pm

Buck's Repair Shop in Fears To Fathom Scratch Creek.

Once you finish reading the next part of the story that mentions the car issue didn’t go away, you’ll need to pull off into the gas station on your left, Bucks. When you head inside, there won’t be anyone in the building, so you’ll need to go through the back door and follow what sounds like a saw being used at the back of the property.

After you’re done recovering from the heart attack that Harry gave you, you’ll exchange some off-putting dialogue and lead him back to the front of the station where the car is. Initially, Harry will suggest that he can fix it, but once old-man Buck has a chance to weigh in, that will suddenly change, and you’ll be instructed to head down the road and find Bill, who should be able to fix the car.

Get back in the car and continue driving in the direction that you originally were when you pulled in, so take a left when leaving out of the front of the station, and continue on that road until you pass a private property sign on the right. Turn down that road and keep going until you reach an old farmhouse, which is Bill’s.

Bill and Charlotte in Fears To Fathom Scratch Creek.

Get out and speak with Bill by knocking on the front door, who will tell you he can’t fix the car until the morning. He’ll suggest sleeping in your car overnight, but Charlotte will insist you head down the trail behind their house to go and stay with Miss Julia, who runs a Bed and Breakfast nearby.

One of you will need to carry the suitcase from the trunk while the other carries the flashlight from the glove compartment. Do not attempt this without a flashlight; even with the light, it will be almost a nightmare to see the trail. Stick to the trail as best you can while Marcus and Tessa argue, and you should eventually reach the next checkpoint.

Miss Julia’s – 9:58 pm

Miss Julia in Fears To Fathom Scratch Creek.

At this point, you should be near the end of the trail and will come to a road that you need to cross to get to the Bed and Breakfast. Knock on the door and speak with Miss Julia, who will then head upstairs to get your room ready. Marcus will ask to use the bathroom, but Tessa won’t be able to follow him.

So, whoever is playing as Marcus will need to head to the first-floor bathroom, and whoever is playing as Tessa will need to stay in the living room. Once you both reconvene, Miss Julia will come back downstairs and offer to give you a tour. After Miss Julia leaves the room, Tessa will express during the conversation that she needs to take a bath.

If you’re playing as Tessa, head to the bathroom and shut the door. Run the bath, and then get in and wait for your bathing meter to fill. Once you’re done, Tessa will realize there are no towels, and Marcus will need to call Miss Julia to ask for some. Unfortunately, there’s nobody to bring any, and the only towels available are in the Church basement, because why wouldn’t they be there?

Marcus will need to leave the room and get the towels by heading outside to the church in the distance. During this entire time that Marcus is gone, Tessa can either remain in the bath or get up to peek through the peephole at Henry, who knocks on the bedroom door. Neither option will change anything unless you decide to open the door for Henry, which you definitely shouldn’t do.

Towels sitting on a rack in Fears To Fathom Scratch Creek.

For those playing as Marcus, head toward the church with the terrifying, red glowing window. Be sure to bring a flashlight with you, as it’s very dark out there. Head down into the church basement, and you should find a laundry room with a rack that has a stack of towels you can pick up.

This is a good time to use the text message feature, as Tessa and Marcus can send texts about what’s happening during their independent scenes since they’re not in proximity for voice chat. That said, once Marcus is locked in the basement, service will fail.

Unfortunately, as you might have guessed, when you attempt to go back up the stairs, the door will be locked. Head to the small back room in the laundry area, and you should find a door that leads to a secret tunnel. Take the tunnel all the way down, and you’ll eventually find yourself in the house’s basement, where you can come up through the door by the downstairs bathroom.

You will get yelled at when you emerge from the basement, since you weren’t supposed to be down there, but you can ignore the man there and head back up to your room with the towels. Marcus and Tessa will exchange words about what happened while they were separated, and then Marcus will head into the bathroom to bathe.

While Marcus is bathing, Tessa will decide to head downstairs to sign the guest book. The guest book you need to sign is on the small desk at the base of the stairs. The game will automatically fill in some details while you’re typing, but the rest of the entry can be filled in with whatever you want.

After you sign the guest book, grab some water from the kitchen like Miss Julia showed you during the tour. After you grab water, Miss Julia will pop up and express her frustration over Marcus going down into the basement, which she explicitly said was off-limits. Once she’s done reprimanding you, head upstairs and have Marcus let you back into the room. Once inside, use the beds to sleep.

3 AM – 3:33 am/?:?? am

Once the next checkpoint loads, Marcus will be in a dreamlike state, and Tessa will awaken in need of another glass of water. If you look out the bathroom window, you’ll see that things are about to head south very quickly, but head downstairs anyway and back to the kitchen to grab a drink of water.

The hallway at Miss Julias in Fears To Fathom Scratch Creek.

On your way back upstairs, you’ll see Miss Julia having a conversation at the door about the other renter who ran out of the house when you first arrived. They’ll very clearly state that they’re planning to use you guys as replacements, so wait for them to finish their conversation and leave, and then head back upstairs. Be careful not to be seen until they leave.

Meanwhile, if you’re playing as Marcus, you will come out of your dreamlike state at some point while Tessa is gone from the room. When you get up, there will be a man in the bathroom, so do not open it. If you do, you’ll immediately die, but as long as Tessa is still okay where she is, then you won’t be fully reset and will instead wake up in bed again.

Instead of opening up the bathroom, Marcus should hide under the bed immediately. Do not hide in the wardrobe. Stay under the bed until Tessa returns and knocks on the door. Once again, this is a good time to use the texting feature.

When Tessa knocks, the man in the room will hide in the wardrobe (which is why you shouldn’t hide there). Once he gets in there, pop out from under the bed and unlock the door as quickly as you can.

When it’s open, Marcus and Tessa need to run as fast as they can. When you reach the top of the stairs, the game will pause to show that the man is chasing you, but you can immediately keep running down the stairs after.

Two wooden coffins in Fears To Fathom Scratch Creek.

Your goal is to run down the stairs, through the basement door, and through the door in the basement that leads to the tunnel Marcus walked through earlier. When you’re in the tunnel, don’t run all the way to the church because the door will be locked, and you’ll be killed. Instead, turn right into the room with the two coffins and have Marcus and Tessa hide in them.

You’ll watch a Scooby-Doo-level running sequence as they all pass by the room, but don’t hop out yet. A fire lookout by the name of C. Hawkins (who you may remember as your coworker, Connor, in Fears To Fathom: Ironbark Lookout) will come into the room and look around. He’s no friend to you, so don’t jump out of the coffins.

Once Connor leaves, both players need to jump out and run back towards the basement. You’ll have another mandatory pause here where it shows they’re following you again. After that, book it as fast as you can upstairs and out through the front door. Don’t stop running until you get back across the street and to the trail that leads to Bill’s and your car.

Bill’s House

Players hiding behind a tree in Fears To Fathom Scratch Creek.

Returning to Bill’s House is the last checkpoint of the game. Thankfully, you won’t have to run the whole trail again, and will instead appear right at the edge of Bill’s house. Don’t go running to your car just yet, though. Instead, crouch down by the tree in the yard, and you should begin watching a dialogue scene between Bill and another man who pulls up in a truck.

Do not try to inch forward until the entire dialogue sequence plays out and Bill goes inside the house. Once he does, the other man will begin walking a path in front of the house that he’ll repeat. You’ll have a prompt telling you to hide in the trailer attached to the car. So, wait for the man to walk towards the front of your car in front of the house, then sprint to the trailer, get inside, and close the doors.

Player driving away from a house on a dirt road in Fears to Fathom Scratch Creek.

Once you’re inside, you should be able to have a conversation exchange between Marcus and Tessa. When they’re done talking, another scene will play out where Bill calls the man into the house. One of you should be able to see the front door of the house from where you’re standing, so wait for the man to go all the way inside and disappear. When he’s gone, jump out and run to the car.

The trailer is heavy, and if you try to pull it, your car will break down again, and you’ll be caught. So while running to the car, one player needs to unhook the trailer. As long as the trailer is unhooked, you’ll be able to start the car and drive down the road, which will end the game and let you read the rest of the story. Congratulations, you survived.

How To Unlock All Possible Endings

Endings

How To Unlock

Interstate – 7:40 pm

‘We took the highway despite the congestion, we reached late and safely’

During the interstate driving portion, don’t have the passenger reroute the GPS. Instead, continue driving on 5 North despite the traffic congestion warning.

Backroads – 8:08 pm

‘We took a wrong turn and got back on the highway not long after’

After you pick up the tree from the road, the next GPS direction will be to turn right onto Roseburg. However, if you pay attention to the signs when you reach them, Roseburg is actually on the left. Follow the sign instead of the GPS and turn left to unlock this good ending.

3 AM – 3:33 am/?:?? am

You Died

From almost the moment this checkpoint begins, you can die at any point. A few examples of how are:

  • Marcus will die if he opens the bathroom door when he wakes up.
  • Marcus will die if he hides in the wardrobe.
  • Marcus and Tessa can die if either of them is caught during the chase sequence.

Bill’s House

You Died

Once again, you can die multiple ways if you’re not careful. For the most part, this is the result of being spotted by Bill or the other man who shows up.

Bill’s House

‘We barely made it back to the main road before the car gave out again…’

This is the true ending of the game, where you escape, survive, and call the police. To achieve this, hide in the trailer until the man goes inside the house, then unhook the trailer and drive the car back to the main road.
