Horror game protagonists who deserve more recognition

When people think of great horror game protagonists, names like Leon Kennedy, James Sunderland, Isaac Clarke, and Ellie often come to mind. After all, they are the protagonists of a giant horror game. But they aren't the only good protagonists in the spooky genre.

More often than not, they don't get the attention or praise they deserve. There can be many reasons for this, but the most common one is that the game it appears in isn't talked about or loved. Here are some protagonists who deserve more credit.

mike

until dawn

In Until Dawn, Mike is aiming a shotgun.

Until Dawn is a blockbuster horror game that received a lot of attention upon its release, but its ensemble cast made it difficult for any of the main characters to truly stand out. But Mike deserves some appreciation. Ultimately, he shows significant growth throughout the story.

He's almost impossible because he's a bit of an arrogant idiot to begin with. But as the situation worsens, he begins to show a more courageous and heroic side as he confronts the many threats he faces and attempts to help his friends. It's a perfect example of how circumstances can change someone.

Juliet Starling

lollipop chainsaw

Typically in horror games, women are often depicted as scared girls waiting to be saved or as deadly survivors. This is what makes Juliet unique. Because she doesn't fit either description.

She is a cheerful and very funny cheerleader with expert zombie-killing abilities. This makes for a great juxtaposition and makes her feel different from almost every other horror protagonist in the game. Naturally, this kind of character only works in light horror games like Lollipop Chainsaw. Still, it's not the only horror game that isn't that scary, but none of the other games have a character as fun as Juliet.

Rebecca Chambers

resident evil 0

Resident Evil is the biggest horror series in gaming, so it's hard for the RE protagonist to be truly underrated. That said, Rebecca Chambers is often overshadowed by celebrities like Leon, Jill, Chris, and Claire. As a result, he does not appear in many games and only acts as the main character in Resident Evil 0.

In the game, she proves to be a resourceful and charming protagonist who must deal with an unprecedented zombie outbreak. Despite being a teenager, she has accomplished some very impressive things.

chuck green

Dead Rising 2

Chuck has his arm around Katie in Dead Rising 2.

Because Frank West is the main and most popular protagonist of the Dead Rising series, Chuck Greene is often overlooked. However, this man also deserves praise for playing the main character role well in DR2.

Although some of his one-liners are a bit off-kilter, it's easy to like and empathize with Chuck. A man who lost his wife is desperately trying to prevent his infected young daughter from turning into a zombie. This means heading out to a zombie-filled mall to find the medicine she needs.

Sebastian Castellanos

Evil Within Series

The back of the main character of The Evil Within.

The Evil Within game is one of the most underrated horror titles in recent memory. The star of that game is the equally underrated Sebastian Castellanos. He is a detective who is going through a difficult time because his daughter died in a house fire and his marriage broke up.

There is more to the story surrounding his family than meets the eye at first, but it is only later that he discovers it. Before that, he becomes a depressed alcoholic and generally more cynical version of himself. So he's not the happiest protagonist, but he's a compelling person who, despite being broken on the inside, still tries to do the right thing.

Michonne

The Walking Dead: Michonne

Michonne is a famous and beloved character from the Walking Dead TV show, but her video game version is often forgotten. That's because it's just a spinoff to Telltale's main Walking Dead game. That said, Michonne's spinoff is not only good, but she's also compelling as a character.

In the miniseries, Michonne struggles to deal with her regrets about leaving her daughters before the outbreak. Because of this, she isn't the most enjoyable or fun character throughout the game. But it's easy to feel sorry for her and admire her remarkable survival skills.

Ouch Brea

parasite eve series

Aya Brea standing next to another character in Parasite Eve 2.

Typically, the protagonist of a horror game has some basic abilities. Because I believe you need to feel vulnerable to whatever monster you encounter. But the Parasite Eve games aren't your typical horror titles. So their main character, Aya Brea, actually has supernatural abilities. This helps her stand out among other horror protagonists.

Fortunately, her special powers did not corrupt her. Aya remains a kind and selfless hero throughout the game. She can be quite funny sometimes. If the Parasite Eve game had come out more recently, it would have been more popular.

regina

Dinosaur Crisis Series

In Dino Crisis, Regina is holding a shotgun.

At some point, Regina wouldn't have been considered underrated since she got a lot of talk when the Dino Crisis games were released. However, the series is not one of Capcom's favorites, as evidenced by the fact that many years have passed since new entries were released.

That year, Regina's reputation faded. But she still deserves a lot of respect. After all, she's a bit of a trailblazer, having appeared before the protagonists of some of the most popular horror games. She also makes a great hero as the sarcastic and sarcastic Bada**.
