Focus of Troll Canyon Quest Guide in Gothic 1 Remake
In Gothic 1 Remake, shrink trolls, find telekinesis scrolls, expand bridges, and gain focus in Troll Canyon.
How to start focusing in Mountain Fortress in Gothic 1 Remake
The Mountain Fortress's Focus can be used during the main quest Focus Stone, given by Saturas after completing the Water Mage's Plan. Before you can find the Focus Stone, you must first visit the tower that Diego marked on your map when he gave you the Water Mage's Plans.
Once you reach that tower, talk to the NPC there to mark the location of the Focus Stone on your in-game map. This conversation will lead your fellow NPC to the assigned focus stone location.
Where to Find the Mountain Fortress
Mountain Fortress is located southeast of Old Camp. If you visited Diego's marked tower before setting off, the location of the Focus Stone will already be marked on the in-game map. However, if you need to, you can use the map above to find the fort.
As you approach the Mountain Fortress, you'll find Lester waiting right in front of the bridge leading there. Talk to him and you'll be warned of a golem just ahead.
There are dangerous enemies in and around the Mountain Fortress, including Harpies. Before crossing the bridge, prepare your healing items and make a manual save.
How to defeat the golem on the bridge
Lester warns that the golem blocking the bridge can only be damaged with blunt weapons, and that you must equip your hands with something like a mace or club. Don't worry if you can't use blunt weapons. If you let Lester do most of the work, you can still win the fight.
In fact, Lester's mace can damage a golem, and it doesn't take very long to take it down. Focus on capturing the golem and surviving, leaving the attacking to Lester. Once the golem is defeated, continue across the bridge and follow the winding path towards the mountain fortress, dispatching the harpies along the way.
How to Get to Mountain Fortress Library
After entering the fortress, move forward and go through the first door on the right. Go up the stairs and through the opening on the right to reach the outside walkway. Follow that passage, then re-enter the fort through the hole on the left and continue up the stairs.
You soon reach a room with a headless marble statue and paintings on the walls. Continue into the next room, which is the dining room, and look carefully at the large painting on the wall. Provides the solution to the bookshelf puzzle in front of the library.
How to Solve the Mountain Fortress Bookshelf Puzzle
A large painting in the restaurant shows a sea creature eating a wolf, and the wolf eating a mole rat. This sequence provides the solution to the library's bookshelf puzzle because it focuses on interacting with the bookshelves in the correct order. There are creature statues on top of each bookshelf, which must be interacted with in the order shown in the picture.
- sea creatures bookshelf
- wolf bookshelf
- Molart Bookshelf
If you interact with the bookshelf in order, a hidden door in the corner will open. Crouch through the opening, climb the stairs to the right, and follow the path to the ladder used to reach the attic. From there, descend from the edge of the attic into the room below.
Where to find the locked chest in the mountain fortress
After falling from the attic, turn around. The door behind it leads to a locked chest, and while you can complete The Focus in Mountain Fortress without opening it, the chest contains a set of Royal Guard Armor. You'll need to track your chest key to claim that wearable.
You can only reach the chest key location if you learn how to climb walls. This ability can be trained as part of the side quest Aiming High, given by Theron in Swamp Camp, or if you don't have it, you'll need to ignore the locked chest in Mountain Fortress.
Where to find the locked chest key in the mountain fortress
To find the key to the locked chest, start in the room off the attic. Go across the room, through the door, up the stairs, and continue to the end where there is a hole in the wall.
If you have learned how to wall climb, you will be prompted to wall climb as you approach the edge of that opening. Press the input that appears and go up and to the left to find another hole. Go through that entrance and up the stairs to the right to reach an inner area with two harpies.
After defeating the enemies, continue upward using the external passage with stairs. The chest containing the locked chest key is at the top of the stairs, near some more harpies, and requires you to pick the lock. For more information on lock picking, see our How to Pick Locks guide.
If you're really worried about chest issues, try this lock picking solver. Lockpicking solutions vary depending on your lockpicking training, making it difficult to provide one universal sequence. Therefore, no specific sequence is provided here.
How to get royal guard armor
After stealing the key from the chest at the top of the tower, climb back down the wall and return to the locked chest in the room below the attic. Use the key to open the chest and claim the Royal Guard Armor inside.
Again, this armor is not required to complete The Focus in Mountain Fortress, and if you can't get it due to your inability to climb walls, don't worry. However, if you can climb walls, I recommend picking up the Royal Guard Armor while you're at the Mountain Fortress.
How to Find a Focus Stone in a Mountain Fortress
After you decide to open or skip the locked chest, return to the room you dropped in from the attic and go through the hole in the wall. Look down and to the right to find the lower focus stone, then drop down. Now kill the harpies that appear and interact with the stone to gain the focus of the mountain fortress.
How to get back to Leicester
After collecting the Focus at the Mountain Fortress, head back up towards the entrance you passed through earlier. Once you're halfway up, look to the right and go down the outer passageway that surrounds the tower.
This is the same external passageway used to first enter the castle. Follow the path you took before and you'll return to the room with the bookshelf puzzle. There Leicester will still be waiting.
How to Complete Focus in Mountain Fortress
After speaking with Lester, you can leave the Mountain Fortress and return to Saturas when you are ready. Picking up the Focus from the Mountain Fortress will complete the quest and unlock The Focus Stones.
