AMMAN: King Abdullah told a delegation of US congressional aides at Al-Husseiniya Palace on Sunday that Jordan would not be drawn into the ongoing Gaza conflict and that the safety of its people would be its top priority.
While reaffirming Jordan’s commitment to regional stability, King Abdullah called for urgent efforts to ease tensions and secure an immediate ceasefire in Gaza. He said the conflict posed a significant threat to the region and called for increased international efforts to prevent it from escalating into a wider war.
He highlighted the dangers of extremist settler attacks on Palestinians in the West Bank and the violation of Islamic and Christian holy sites in Jerusalem. He reiterated the need for a political solution based on a two-state framework as the only path to sustainable peace and security for Palestinians and Israelis.
King Abdullah also stressed the importance of continued support to the UN relief agency for Palestine refugees to fulfill its humanitarian mission.
The meeting also discussed opportunities to strengthen the U.S.-Jordan relationship, and King Abdullah expressed his gratitude for the continued support of the United States. In turn, the U.S. delegation recognized the important role that Jordan, under King Abdullah’s leadership, has played in promoting peace and stability in the region.
The meeting was attended by Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Minister for Overseas Missions Ayman Safadi, Head of the Royal Household Department Dr. Jafar Hassan, and Jordan's Ambassador to Washington D.C. Dina Khawar.
