Blue Exorcist -The Blue Night Saga- features great opening and ending song videos.

The season begins with a banger episode that introduces the younger versions of Yuri, Rin, and Yukio's mother. This episode mainly focuses on how Yuri lived as a child and how he met Shiro. As for the main character, we see Rin Okamura travel to the past and meet Mephisto, who acts as his guide.

Go back to where it all began

The meeting between Yuri and Shiro

The episode begins with Rin Okumura arriving 40 years in the past and meeting her young father Shiro Fujimoto and an alternate version of Mephisto. One thing to note is that the animation is as amazing as ever and the character designs are truly amazing. The effort the studio put into character details, especially Mephisto, is truly commendable.

When Rin and Mephisto meet, the latter explains that he is here to guide him, but also warns Rin that this particular story will end in tragedy, and he remembers it best. Just a few seconds later, Rin meets young Yuri in abject poverty. At this time, Mephisto warns Rin not to interfere with people from the past. It won't cause a time paradox, but it will cause confusion.

Now, we don't know exactly what he means, but it could be hinted that Lin had intentions to change something in the past. Yuri seemed to be living as a homeless person, but he seemed happy that he had found family, including other homeless people and Obaba, who was blind.

Satan's Introduction

As the homeless people chat, we learn about Yuri playing with a blue fireball, and Obaba replies that it is actually the souls of the dead, even Linka, also known as Hellfire. Now Mephisto moves forward a bit in time and sees Yuri playing with Linka, who is actually Satan.

What's heartbreaking is that Satan actually burns down the house Yuri was staying in, resulting in the death of her founding family.

This scene also brilliantly depicts what homeless people go through every day. Even after their tragic deaths, they are still despised. After many trials, the lovely Yuri accidentally discovers Shiro's small hideout and marks their first meeting.

Sent to a mental hospital

Suddenly, several exorcists enter the small hideout and begin interrogating Shiro. They also decide to find Yuri and take the two to the asylum, which is actually the Exorcist Academy. This is because Yuri can also see the demonic black dog brought by the exorcists.

At the end of the episode, we see a heartbreaking flashback of Rin exclaiming that she was once a troublesome kid and had no one but Yukio and Shiro. So while Lin still had someone to live for, his mother had no one, which made him extremely sad. Yuri plans to become an exorcist at the Exorcist Academy.

final thoughts

If the first episode looks this promising, we can only imagine how good the rest of the season will be. The animation is pure eye candy, and the character designs, especially Mephisto, Yuri, and Shiro, are well done.

Amazarashi's opening song Tsukaku is truly powerful, and the ending song and visuals are beautiful, calm, yet heartbreaking. As Mephisto said, this could end tragically, but we are so ready for what will happen. Blue Exorcist: Saga of the Blue Night It's ready for us.
