There are a lot of video game artbooks. They are great. When the company comes and sees a pile of a large hard cover book on my shelf, I think, “Wow, he is too intellectual.” Then when you get a little closer and the artists realize it? Hey, I'm not just smart, I'm extremely culture. Now I do not realize that everyone has been impressed by me, and that the book is all full of pictures of body Kut wearing pants.
Artbook is my favorite product when I go to the same convention as Pax West. They are easily wrapped, rarely damaged in public transportation, and as mentioned earlier, make me look sophisticated and cool. I will choose all the artbooks that I can see for the game I played, sometimes I played for the art of Persona 5 on the shelves. This year, I picked up the art of killing the princess.
Killing the princess is a great game. According to my power rankings, I was one of the best in 2023 and when I bought a Doki Doki Lit Art Book, I was looking forward to visiting my favorite body fear in the game. What I did not expect is that this book is a game. No, seriously. Princess Slay's art is the entire game from the beginning to the multiple end. It kills the princess, not just artbooks: analog edition.
Kill the princess, get out of the screen
Did you just blow your heart? When the good people of serenity forge booth explained the concept to me, it definitely blown my day. Abby Howard, a game artist and half of the BLACK TABBY game, is a template with Tony Howard-Aras, a husband and game designer, to create a layout of the book, and it's amazing how well it goes.
Once you see how it works, it means a lot. Slay the Princess is a visual novel that tells the story through a mix of conversation, narration and steel images. You can almost imagine that the book is approaching and the game is that adaptation, but that's another way.
If you haven't played the game, the book is not exactly replaced. Less conversation and less choice should be supplemented. Like the game, it does not evolve in the same way as each choice, but all the scenes of all chapters are included. You get all versions of princesses. Not all small details.
It also gains Howard's own comment, crosses the margins from almost every page, and spreads negative space. Reading her insight while following the story is very similar to listening to the director's commentary in the film. She writes about the artist process, her influence and the intention of many choices. It is a fascinating behind -the -scenes story, but it is also a wonderful way to visit the game in a new way.
Looking deeper on the princess
When I hit a credit for Princess Slay, I knew that I had much more to find. There are many branch paths in this game, so you can make all the choices and not see all the results in a single play -through. Even if the game is not short (only 3 hours), it takes to overcome the estimates that it takes about 17 hours to see everything. I hope you have time, but the gamer's work never ends.
This book makes it easy to find the scene I missed. When I first brought home, I quickly flipped it, and I kept looking for the version of the princess that I had never seen before. The ability to run without playing the game is so good, and because I played once, my heart can fill a lot of details that vivid the character. I hear the conversation when I read it, and I can imagine the frustrated tone of the narrator by changing my heart for each page's sales.

In addition to finding a deeper understanding of stories and themes, it is also a good way to explore the game design of Black Tabby. The structure of the book itself helps to explain how the game is composed, while learning a lot about Abby's art philosophy (or because she tends to be slightly self -reliant). It is one of the well -designed projects, but it looks simple, but it would have been anything that combines everything.
I can't think of another game where you can faithfully reproduce this book, but it's just one of the countless things that make the princess special.
