Reminder. If you've never played New World: Aeternum, you probably won't get the chance. The developer announced that it would be delisted. when? Almost immediately after the announcement. When is it relevant to type this message? A few hours ago. He's dead, Jim.
Not yet. It's not dead in the sense that if you own it you can keep playing it for a while. However, the service end date was also announced at the same time. That's right. Maybe not too invested.
The future ends with something new
In a blog post ironically titled “The Future of New World: What to Expect,” Amazon Games repeated its revelation from a few months ago that no new content would be created for Aeternum after the final season update. But this time it went much further.
“New World: Aeternum will officially go offline on all platforms on January 31, 2027. On January 15, 2026, the title will be removed from the list and will no longer be available for purchase. Players will be able to continue playing New World: Aeternum on the platform they purchased it on, extending the Nighthaven season until the servers go offline on January 31, 2027.”
The problem is that “January 15, 2026” is… today. This is the date on the statement itself. At first, very little registered. Because every time a new year comes, it takes a few weeks for your brain to fully accept that the year has actually moved forward by one. But then I did a double take. There are no warnings here. As was the case with the now-shuttered Anthem, there's no opportunity to buy it on the cheap and see what the fuss is about. (Perhaps in part because most of the “fuss” about Aeternum has been overwhelmingly negative, but still.)
I think extending the Nighthaven season makes sense. There's really nothing else to do. You can also purchase Marks of Fortune (aka microtransaction currency) until July 20th. So if you want to buy a game that expires in 54 weeks, go for it.
If you're wondering if there's an opportunity for developers to whateverAt least the bug will be investigated:
“There will be no new content or additional server consolidation for the remainder of the game. However, we will continue to monitor bugs and performance to ensure the game runs smoothly as the situation calms down.”
“Together we created something special,” the mournful blog post reads. “We’re sad to say goodbye, but we’re honored to have been able to share so much with our community.” Aeternum fans – I know you're out there – I'm sorry for your loss.
