Yesterday, in the first of many major showcases this summer, PlayStation revealed a rumored God of War title based on Kratos' wife Faye. Titled God of War Laufey, the game connects to the events of the 2018 reboot as players enter the afterlife with Faye. And cubes.
Every new God of War game is exciting. However, there is one person who is not at all impressed by this reveal. Series creator David Jaffe said the game “looks like shit.”
The original creator of God Of War doesn't think Laufey will sell well and compares it to Forspoken.
Jaffe livestreamed his reaction to yesterday's State of Play, passing judgment on everything PlayStation revealed, and was generally positive about the event. There were two games in particular that he didn't seem to like. It was Marvel's Wolverine and God of War Laufey.
The developer-turned-YouTuber felt that Wolverine was “very generic from a gameplay standpoint,” but unsurprisingly he had more scathing things to say about Laufey.
“That’s ridiculous. I’ll be honest with you.” After the showcase, he said: “It reminds me of the game Forspoken.
“That's the first thing that comes to mind when you see the trailer: It feels like a producer's studio. Cory is incredibly talented. He's a much better writer than I am. He's a smart guy. It feels like we're forced into a situation where it's like, 'I can't pay you to make something new. You're going to do what you want, but do it in the context of God of War.' I'm just doing this. I don't know if that's why it looks like that. It feels so uninspiring and boring.”
Dead. The game won't do as well as they hope…
He added: “It's dead. The game won't do as well as they hope.”
“It feels like Cory or someone wants to write a fantasy story,” he tells viewers. “We've lost the gore and violence of the first game. We've lost the character. We've already lost that character after 2018, because he's changed so much. He's no longer Kratos. Now we've lost the identifiable mythology. It lost me in the beginning because of the cube and the little Disney characters. It seems like fantasy.”
Although he enjoyed elements of the trailer, namely the combat, Jaffe highlighted the fact that the game looked a bit dated. boring.
“If they took out the title God of War, and you didn’t know the God of War story and there was no Kratos, it would just be a story about a dead goddess, and they wouldn’t talk about it… This just seems like the same shit anymore. [It’s] That's so fucking stupid, man. No one pulled someone aside and said, 'This is not the God of War.' 'I don't know what that is.
“It looks bland, it looks repetitive, it feels like it's been around before, and it was. The cover is terrible. The name is terrible. It feels like it's been abandoned. It has that flair, and it feels very bland.”
This isn't the first time Jaffe has been dissatisfied with the franchise's modern direction. He admitted that he liked God of War 2018, but felt that Amazon's teaser for the God of War series was “terrible in many ways” and asked, “What were they thinking?” About God of War: Sons of Sparta.
