Even if you've never seen SnapCube's Sonic Adventure 2 Live Fandub, you've definitely heard one of the many jokes from the show. Many of the lines in this redub now have a life of their own, whether it's Eggman missing his wife, urinating on the moon, or intimate photos leaked to Twitter.com.
However, some fans were angry about this. Now things have come to a head as Sonic the Hedgehog 3 adapts the story of Sonic Adventure 2 and hits cinemas. Some people think this story is underrated because of the popularity of fandubs, while others think it's harmless fun.
Some Sonic fans are getting a little annoyed with all the Fandub references.
Others love the Sonic Adventure 2 fandub and can't get enough of all the jokes it makes.
This latest debate started with Twitter user @PKontwt saying that the SnapCube video caused “irreparable damage to Sonic Adventure 2.” Apparently she's not the only one who feels this way, as the post has garnered a lot of attention, garnering around 10,000 likes at the time of writing. And in fact, when many of us see a single frame of Eggman, we probably think of his iconic announcement speech before we think of the actual game.
However, others in Reddit's thread disagree with this sentiment. “I disagree with the negative comments on the SA2 fandub,” user PrinceARRON wrote.
TheGhostlyMage says “No, because this video probably increased awareness/player base for the game years after it was originally released.”
Many others agree. “SA2 is one of my favorite games and I love the Sonic fandub so much,” says nrj6490.
However, even some fans of the video think it's a bit off. “This is what happens when something becomes popular and people start seeing that popular thing a lot and they get sick of it and start viewing it negatively,” says BK1565. “I think fandub is fun, but I get tired of seeing it mentioned over and over again.”
Of course, we've seen recently how fandom-in-joke can go too far. Some Sonic fans were planning to cheer when Maria dies in the new movie, and there's at least one video showing people doing just that. But most fans begged the community not to do this. Because this can be quite inconsiderate of fellow moviegoers, or at least confusing to them.
In any case, Sonic Adventure 2 isn't any less popular now. Since Sonic 3 was released in theaters, the 2001 game has seen an increase in player numbers on Steam, so at least some people are experiencing the story as intended.
