They are trapped in some kind of dome that causes nearby enemies to hallucinate, and the twist is that everyone has been captured by the technicians. The technicians are harvesting energy from the characters' fights, and they're screaming Angstrom Levy. His presence in the show, including the fact that he's still alive, is thanks to the Technician, and the changes within the universe (at least as explained by this story mode) hint at why Angstrom Levy isn't involved.

like Invincible VSAt the end of the story mode, an abrupt cliff appears showing engineers mining the Earth. All of this appears to have been due to Angstrom Levy's plan. It's hard to imagine that he wouldn't be involved, at least possibly as a technician. His absence was already a bummer, but the story mode makes it even more heartbreaking.

One good possibility that could come out of this is: Invincible VS's upcoming DLC character. Reputable leaker MultiverSusie claims, among other things, that Angstrom Levy will be coming at some point in the future. Beyond Levy, Immortal, and Universa are confirmed in Quarter Up, along with The Mauler Twins, Agent Spider, Damien Darkblood, Oliver, Dinosaurus, and Volcanikka. It remains to be seen, but at least they'll get him into the fold.

Furthermore, I hope the DLC characters will include new story chapters or something equivalent. The story mode's ending is incredibly abrupt, but it's easy to see how all of the aforementioned characters could be drawn into the story. As players work their way through everything, they will ultimately reach Angstrom Levy and defeat him, but due to the damage caused by the mines, they may also encounter Dinosaurus and Volcanikka. no matter what happens Invincible VS's story mode ending doesn't fit Angstrom's absence at all.
