Whether it's the birds you fought across most of Kanto's lawns in Pokemon FireRed & LeafGreen, some legendary Pokemon, or something in between, there are plenty of flying-type Pokemon in the third generation remakes of the original Pokemon games that are worth catching and raising.
We've selected some of our favorite Flying-type Pokemon that we've used throughout our Indigo League journey and Pokemon FireRed & LeafGreen. So if you find yourself in a battle with a Bug, Fighting, or Grass-type and have no other way to deal with it, ask for help from this stalwart Flying-type Pokémon.
Since we didn't get our first pure Flying-type Pokémon until the next generation with the debut of Arceus, all of the Pokémon below are dual-types that use Flying as their secondary type in Pokemon FireRed & LeafGreen.
Fearow
Your Spearow will certainly be one of the first you can catch in the wild in Pokemon FireRed & LeafGreen, but its prevalence in the earliest routes in Kanto means you'll have more time to train it to become the best, like no Flying type has ever done before.
All differences between Pokemon FireRed & LeafGreen and Red & Blue versions
Because a lot has changed between the first and third generations, Pokemon FireRed & LeafGreen is The Pokemon Company's attempt to bring Kanto up to speed.
With its excellent speed stat and relatively high attack stat for a Pokemon discovered early in Pokemon FireRed & LeafGreen's Indigo League journey, having Fearow is a great way to gain some good power, whether in fight or flight. If you need a Pokemon to keep Fly going, Fearow is a good choice!
Physiot
Pidgey can be found in almost every lawn around Kanto, and its evolved form can also be seen as you progress through the main story of Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen. However, if you catch Physio early and train it properly, you can have a great partner Pokémon with Physio being the final form of its evolutionary lineage.
It's a good choice, but it's especially strong when compared directly to Fearow, which has fewer points in both HP, defense, and special stats. Pidgeot also has Mega Evolution, so you know it's good.
knock it out
What's scarier than a bird coming directly at you at high speed? The bird has three heads and is taller than the world's average height for a human male. With his impressive height of 1.8 m (5'10″), incredible speed stats, and offensive power worth exploiting, Dodrio is a true triple threat.
The best Flight-type moves, Peck, Pluck, and Drill Peck, are each physical moves. This means that in Pokemon FireRed & LeafGreen, you can use its powerful attack stat to your advantage in any battle where you need an edge with the powerful Flying type.
Gyarados
Gyarados is a dual type of water/I am Rather than being a water/dragon hybrid, this means Gyarados is here to surprise enemies with his flying moves in Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen.
The 24 Best Non-Legendary Pokemon, Ranked
Legendary Pokémon are legendary for a reason, but non-legendary Pokémon are just as amazing.
The only real flying move to speak of is Hurricane, which you learn by default at Lv. Unfortunately, it's 44, which uses the special attack stat instead. However, with a lot of good moves from the Water and Dragon types and many that can be learned through TM, Gyarados will always be one fierce enemy.
Aerodactyl
No matter what generation of Pokémon games you play, Fossil Pokémon are a neat inclusion that allow you to resurrect the fossilized remains of ancient Pokémon to train and raise yourself. One of the first fossil Pokémon we encountered was Aerodactyl, a dual-type rock/flying dinosaur.
With a speed stat of a whopping 130, it's almost guaranteed that you'll get the first move in a fight (any trainer worth their salt will tell you this can make the difference between victory and defeat). With an attack stat of 105 for powerful moves like fly and wing attack, you'll have little trouble getting it. that Fossil Pokemon battle you in Pokemon FireRed & LeafGreen.
Charizard
If you chose Charmander as your starter in Pallet Town when starting your journey through Kanto in Pokemon FireRed & LeafGreen, you'll notice just how powerful it is when performing fire-type special attacks like Flamethrower, Fire Spin, or Flare Blitz.
However, Charizard, as its name suggests, is a dual-type Pokémon with both Fire and Flying abilities, and thankfully, some of the best Flying-type moves in Pokémon are ones that deal special attack damage. With Air Slash, Air Cutter, and Air Slash at its disposal, Flame Pokémon will take your fighting abilities to a new level.
Dragonite
A dual-type Flying and Dragon Pokémon like Dragonite is sure to be a powerhouse on the battlefield, especially in the generation of games that first introduced the pseudo-legendary concept, and Dragonite has high stat totals that will undoubtedly prove its worth.
21 Strongest Dragon Pokémon, Ranked
Dragon-type Pokémon are powerful beings, and they are some of the most exemplary creatures in this dynamic subcategory.
With the highest physical attack stat on our list so far and powerful moves that use types like Dragon, Water, Fire, Electric, and Psychic, Dragonite is one of the most versatile Flying-type Pokemon to catch and train in Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen.
Hoo
Now definitely moving on to legendary Pokemon, any monster that can go this far to catch better be worth its weight in gold on the battlefield, and thankfully Ho-Oh certainly doesn't disappoint.
Sky Attack will always be dangerous when used with a physical attack stat as high as a Rainbow Pokémon, but watch out for Holy Fire as well, as it is also a dual typing for Fire. This has been Ho-Oh's signature move in this generation of games, and it's clear why when you see him take down his opponents in one hit!
Lugia
Of course, Ho-Oh may be the most hard-hitting of the Tower Duo of Pokemon in Pokemon FireRed & LeafGreen, but with higher Defense and Special Defense than the other Pokemon on the list of best flying types in Pokemon FireRed & LeafGreen, Lugia is the clear winner in any battle of attrition.
The Diving Pokémon has strong, steady Attack and Special Attack stats for powerful moves like Aeroblast and Sky Attack, and its learning set includes many good Psychic and Water-type moves to achieve legendary status, so you'll almost never fail to take Lugia into battle.

In Pokemon FireRed & LeafGreen, the legendary bird that flies overhead around Kanto returns to Pallet Town and is entirely dependent on the starter you choose from Professor Oak. This is because the bird that is spawned from a save is always the one with a weak starter typing.
Articuno has a lethal combination of ice and flying moves, Zapdos' incredible special attacks ensure that numerous electric and flying moves will hurt, and Moltres rounds out the trio of Legendary Birds with an equally impressive special attack stat and a moveset filled with fire and flying moves.
We recommend choosing a starter that has the same stat totals but provides the legendary bird you want to use!
